Looking at heading on the KAT May 8th on my DRZ. I've done some of it but none of the hards. May be by myself which I really don't want to do for obvious reasons. Hard 11 appears to be the most difficult with the ledges and loose rock (and mud) from the two vids I've seen on youtube. I know having a lighter bike is the way to go but it can get heavy real quick. Have any of you pros gone on the hards solo, with what and how did it go? Thanks!

I'm most definitely not a pro. The go to recommendation is dont go alone especially on the hard sections. That being said.......Ive done it. Even the mains are very desolate so if you need help it will be a long time coming. At least you havd a drz, the most reliable bike ever! I always carry my Garmin InReach. I will add that our part of the world has seen record rainfall recently so ALL the streams are going to be running near flood levels. That is going to make some of the low areas impassible. Y'all be careful out there.

forgive me for posting this in both threads (IN rider thread) but I am just so stoked...

Jeff - this is just awesome - as a newer rider i had an absolute blast - can't wait to get back - thank you for all your hard work

always wondered what the KAT would be like...got a little taste of it today

heading down, picking & choosing between ruts & slick flats & rock drop-offs (with a heck of a lot of sliding going on)
following responsibly reckless & getting hung up on a downed tree (man was i wishing hard that i had a real skid plate)
running the creeks & crossing plenty of other creeks (deep ones & a few that just about pushed the limit) & crashing thru massive mudholes
    [IMG]
building a bridge to get from where we were to where we needed to be
    [IMG]
cuz we got lots more to get into

well, day 2 of the KAT is in the books for us...

got to a late start cuz of chain snafu's (yes, plural) & yes it really was just 300 ft in-between incidents (i have visual proof if anyone needs it)

started with some nice twisting roads that took us right into some crazy mudpits, sand, & the deepest creek crossings yet - like headlight level when you find the deepest hole you can find without even looking
    [IMG]
one of my favorite sections of the day was this nice long stretch of rocky stuff interspersed with puddles (& wild horses that were awesome to see) that soon became mudpits & mudbogs that got a little shady at times
    [IMG]

oh look.... mud.... that goes on & on ad nauseum
    [IMG]

left the trax at 0030 figuring it was time to find some cell service & a place to crash for the nite

passed up the campground & hit pavement to jackson cuz it was time for some food after 8 hours of riding
[IMG]weren't so lucky with finding a place to stay (they shutter up here early) so we got to ride a little more (no complaints here) & got to hazard at 0218 (at least it was still 27° cuz SOME of us don't have heated grips)

    here's what i know...
    1) it's been a blast responsiblyreckless - your stories, your help, & your patience,
    2) i cannot wait to get down here & finish what was started,
    3) zip ties are awesome, &
    4) i can cuss with the best of 'em after picking up my bike 4x in the same stretch of mudhades

I'd roll with you but the KAT is too much of a time commitment for me at the moment. A couple of us are planning a quick ride on the Smoky 500 before summer. I'm sure its not nearly as epic as the KAT but you'd be welcome to join us.

Well we'll have to keep in touch. I'm in New Mexico now , be heading back to Pennsylvania the beginning of may . Planning on making a couple improvements to the house then putting it on the market for sale . Going to try living in my toy hauler as a nomad and see how that works out.
