Dust to Dawson D2D Information Page
    Dust to Dawson

For the 16th year adventure riders and friends will meet in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada. This years gathering will be June 19th and 20th, 2008

As the years have gone by and the number of bikers joining the ride has grown, so has the excitement and national and international attention. Originally called the "Over the Top Hop", what started as a ride for a few Anchorage area friends has grown to the point that in 2007 140 motorcyclists meet in Dawson to celebrate the longest day of the year.

D2D is a ride your own ride trip. To quote the D2D founder, Fighter Stein, "This ain't not (Blankin') Rally". What is it then? D2D is the perfect excuse to load your bike, head North and enjoy a great ride through some of the most beautiful country on earth and join adventure riders from around the world in the center of the famous Klondike.

For many riders D2D and Dawson are only the beginning of the adventure tour. Many take a side trip to Inuvik, NT, Canada by way of the Dempster Highway. Or visit the town of Eagle, and tour the fort on the banks of the Yukon river. For a more adventurous ride, many do the Denali Highway or go all the way to North Slope of Alaska by way of the Dalton Highway. Make it a "D"lightful trip-Dawson, Dempster, Denali, Dalton.

    2008 D2D Events:

    Thursday June 19th, 2008
    Arrive and tour Dawson:
Don't miss the Dawson City Museum and Railroad Steam Engine
Museum, the Robert Service Cabin or the Jack London interpretive
Centre. Spend your evening at Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling
Hall and you can't be a true ADVRIDER without having a Sourtoe
Cocktail at the Jack London Bar located at our host hotel The
Downtown Hotel. Remember this is almost the longest day of the
year so a midnight trip to the Dome above Dawson may be in order
for a great view of the Yukon river and the town of Dawson.

    Friday June 20th, 2008
    Let the games begin:
12:00 pm--Poker run. Registration begins at Noon in front of the
Downtown Hotel. $10.00 entry fee with 50% of the proceeds going
to the winning hand and 50% to local charity. The winning hand will
be decided at the riders banquet. The route is a 60 mile
loop of dirt and gravel roads through the famous gold mining district
that made Dawson famous. Bikes leave at 1:00 pm.

6:00 pm--Riders Banquet. $25.00 Steak dinner with all the
trimmings. Cash Bar and lots of Door Prizes. This event is held in
Palace Grand Theater, a historic building dating back to the 1890's
gold rush. Tickets may be purchased in the lobby of the Downtown
hotel. Pick up your tickets early space may be limited.

9:00 pm--Biker Games. The street in front of the Downtown Hotel
is blocked off for motorcycle competition. No entry fee.
    Singles events: Slow Race
    Blindfold Race
    Serpentine Race
    Ball Drop Race

    Two up Events: Balloon Toss
    Hot Dog Bite
Prizes for event winners, over all winner and crowd favorite.

Midnight--Posting of the bikes. Meet on the street in front of the
Downtown Hotel. Every bikes gets a "Dust to Dawson" sticker placed
on the front fender. You must be present to qualify.

D2D T-Shirts, long and short sleeve, are on sale in the lobby of the
Downtown Hotel. Again supply is very limited. $20.00 & $25.00.

What's next? It's the longest day of the year. The bars are open,
The tables are still playing at the casino, live music and dancing all
over town, and don't forget the "Bar Crawl". There is a lot to see and
do in the area so feel free to come a day or two early or stay a day or
    longer.

If your heading to Tok, Alaska either coming or going to D2D try these biker friendly businesses: Fast Eddies/Youngs Motel 907-883-4411
    Golden Bear Motel 907-883-2561
    Sourdough RV/Camping 907-883-5543

The ride from or to Dawson from Tok, Alaska over the Top of the World highway is not to be missed. Only about 70 miles of dirt/gravel remain but the views are amazing. Fuel can be found at Chicken Alaska, Eagle, Alaska and Boundry, Alaska. Best bet is Chicken. Plus Chicken is the only food stop between Tok and Dawson.

This year, 2008, you will need a passport to enter Canada from the US.
If you don't have one get your application in now. Leave the guns at home, they don't work in Canada.

Weather: Dawson weather can fall between 40 and 80f. Expect rain somewhere along your ride. Weather for the D2D is usually warm and sunny, we plan it that way. Pack your sunblock.

Canada has a helmet law. Don't press the start button in Dawson without having your skidlid on.

Some cell phone service will work in Canada and most in Dawson. You're on your own here.

The exchange rate of US to Canadian dollars is always changing. You'll get the best exchange rate at the bank. Your ATM card will spit out Canadian Dollars at the advertised daily rate.

You'll be buying your gasoline by the liter. Any attempt to figure gas mileage per gallon, cost per gallon will require a lap top and a math major for a riding partner.

Dawson is a small town. You can walk from end to end in 15 minutes. So after the second drink, park your scooter and walk. The Mounties always get their Drunk.

For 16 years Dick Van Nostrand, the owner of the Downtown Hotel has been our host and the town of Dawson treats us very well. Dawson is a very biker friendly town full of tourists. We (motorcycle guests) need to keep in mind that we are not trying to create a Hollister of the North!

Construction: Road Construction is a way of life in the Great White North. Many roads are chip seal and patches of loose gravel are a way of life. Most patches are well marked as are loose shoulders so be careful.
When you encounter a flag person with a line of stopped traffic it is normal for motorcycles to go to the head of the line. The flag person will usually send motorcycles out first to follow the pilot car. Mr. and Mrs. Motorhome may complain but kindly explain to them that it is for the riders safety that the DOT allows bikes out first. Or just explain that it one less time you will have to pass their ass.

    Have questions? Just ask.

See you all at D2D. Ride safe, ATGATT, it's your ride do it your way.

    AKrider

I really liked the T-Shirt design for 2007. The T-Shirt sizing, however, left a bit to be desired. I think there may have been some sort of funky metric to english conversion error. My XL shirt was more like a L.

    Looking forward to 2008.
