After seven hours of driving the truck and camper north to Page where we secured them, we then unloaded bikes and loaded our gear for six or so days of riding.

A bit more than thirty miles of windy pavement we turned to the south to the Winter road and found a site out of the wind on the flank of the Buckskin mountains.
[IMG] Day one 16 miles of dirt

Next morning we rolled over the Buckskin mountains towards Fredonia.
Looking off the mountain to where we will be spending the next week.

    North into Utah.

Out of the mountains and into the sage.

Had to pull over just before Fredonia for this shot and the final topping off of vital fluids, 6.3 gallons of fuel, 14 liters of water, and a few more beers.

The next piece of pavement was close to twenty five miles, that is it for pavement for the next five days!

A navigation error on the Yellowstone road brought us to what could look like a job site of mine, very cool.

As a mason by trade I truly appreciate the effort men put out in the day.

Back on route the land was starting to show it's vastness.

    Mighty Mount Trumbull.

    Typical in this region.

    Heading towards the lava.

Worked our way around the north aspect of Trumbull.

To a camp south of Potato valley.

Pat had not been anticipating cooking on Juniper, well my tent is in a grove of Oak, a much more preferred fuel!
Awesome Happy hour with a Turkey gobbling across the canyon through out the evening.
Day two 90 miles of dirt

The next morning was wonderfully mild.

Rolling down the west side we get great views of Upper Hurricane Valley, and Poverty mountain.

    Also known as Bundyville.

We decided even though we would be back here in a few days it would be a good idea to top off the fuel at the Bar 10.

Not sure if the first point is Whitmore or Andrus, but the long dark line on the horizon is the Kelly point peninsula, our goal for the evening was Kelly point.

    First we fuel.

    There is the ranch.
We talked to Steve about fuel sales, $5.00 a gallon. He reached way down to the bottom of the barrel and told us we were lucky as the fuel was this low and the next truck(5,000 gal.) would not be there until Tuesday. We gave him $30 for 5 gallons and told him we would see him Wed.

Headed back to the school house road then turned west towards Poverty mountain.

Good but rutted ranch roads pushed us towards Poverty mountain, then the route turned into a lot of fun as we rolled under the south aspect of the mountain.

Junction with the Parashant wash road.

In a short distance we were on the Mt. Dellenbaugh rd. making short work of the 24 miles to the junction at Oak Grove.
    Heading towards the peninsula.

At junction we had already done 75 miles, it was another 31 miles to Kelly point.
    VT ranch history monument.

The first few miles were beautiful dual sport terrain.

    Slipping past Mt. Dellenbaugh.

Approaching the Waring ranch the road surface was starting to show it's volcanic face.

Some where along here there was a newer sign that informed the traveler that it was still 27 miles to the point.

So the volcanic mad face was here to stay for a few dozen miles?

We had a slight reprieve for around nine miles with its own challenge of not getting jousted from the side by stout Juniper or Sage.

Then it was back to the black stones.

As in most rim approaches once the limestone shows up and the trees start getting shorter you know you are close.

Over the last three decades I have walked and climbed several thousand miles below the rim of the Grand Canyon. I have been so blessed to have had Pat along with a small handful of men to share these experiences. Here are a few of my favorite shots of the man eighteen years my elder in the inner Canyon.

These are all from the same 12 day trip a few years back, so we kind of know what we are looking at from the rim.

Again I am so blessed to have Pat along on this unforgettable ride!

There is a three or so mile section of the road where you are only twenty yards or so from the edge.

With a good long day ahead of us we rolled out pretty early.

A few departing shots from Twin.

So the big difference between Kelly and Twin is the presence of the volcanic surface and the distance out and back being doubled.

Took a little detour to the west towards Snap.

Then back towards the Dellenbaugh road.

Came up on a smoothing iron. Immediately after we fix another flat.

After many miles we hit Main street and rolled to a lunch spot.

Well it was Tuesday and looking at this old guy who I am sure hauled its share of fuel in the day reminded me of.....

.....this guy who did not slow down at all coming back from the Bar 10.

We avoided the floaties in the freshly delivered fuel and rolled past the ranch.
On the way down to the Bar 10 they utilized a dugway and I have been wondering how we were going to lose the rest of the elevation down Whitmore to arrive seven hundred vertical above the river, going past the landing strip I began to see it and figured out we were going to be riding a lava flow all the way to the overlook.

A little ways up the road at the ranch headquarters sits this ship.

This is our sixth day of riding and have spoke to fewer than two hand fulls in those days.

The ship took off with a load of folks that just got off the plane, headed to raft the river. How many thrills in one trip?

After acquiring fuel, and our first snack and water resupply in five days we were so thankful for their services.
