+1 mods be damned I don't care if there's no motos I think a Ride report here is in order! You guys definitely know how to live! And I'm jealous as hell of you people with actual "careers" and "Vacation Time":rofl:rofl

was wondering what was up with the wan's...wow, 2 up across the pond on a boat :norton ...sounds like another epic fun adventure for the memory books. You two will be rock'en and roll'en in land mode for at least a couple weeks.

Wife and I enjoyed a 2wk love boat cruise last Jan from LA to Hawaii and back. I know it's not anything close to your adv but it's still way cool, and a little scary, to be many days from land in any direction. Couldn't imagine those seas in a boat less than 900ft. Love that Hawaiian :spam .

    Hi!
Wow, I'm rusty - couldn't remember how to do anything (youtube, photobucket, linkies, etc.).
    Okay, first things first -

Ahoy, larryboy! You confused me on that one, but google is my friend.

    Haha!

    Okay,
“What I Did on My Summer Vacation”
    by, littlewan
(I hope I don’t get yelled at for this, you guys)

So, some of you actually like sailing, huh? It'’s not my favorite, but I’'m getting used to it. I like the other good stuff that comes with it.
    Like dolphins...

Ooh, TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN for that one - the wind noise is pretty loud (didn'’t notice it earlier, sorry).

I'’ll try and make this brief, but basically we sailed from Mexico to Hawaii then went from Hawaii to San Francisco.
We were in the sea of cortez, got supplies in La Paz, and then left from Los Frailes (near Cabo).

Look, I figured out a way to get a moto into this post!

    RIDE CONTENT!

That pic is from our Baja ride in 2007.
We were on that road that goes from Mission San Luis Gonzaga to San Evaristo (and then continues along the coast to La Paz).

If you look behind me, out in the water, you can see a little island...

    That's Isla San Francisco.
And here's us, anchored in the South end of the island...
(we're in the shallow water, closest boat to the bottom of the frame)
You can see the Baja peninsula in the background.

So, if you’'ve ever ridden to San Evaristo, now you know what’'s out there!

I don'’t want this to be too boring, and we really didn'’t take many pics, so here are some random photos:

    Did some diving/snorkeling.
I love these guys - spotted sharpnose puffer fish
    so cute!

The sea turtles in Hawaii were awesome. We were really lucky and got some good pics.

Matt got some video, too. We made one for our Moms, so the music isn'’t quite what you’'re used to from us (cheesy), but if you want to see it, here’'s the linkie: honu

    Makua Valley, Oahu
    [IMG]

Haven'’t seen the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but we heard it was filmed in Kauai. Maybe this will look familiar
    Tunnels Beach, Kauai
    [IMG]

There’'s not a lot to take photos of in the middle of the ocean.
We have a bunch of sunrise pics, here are a couple pretty ones
(do these look familar, dvwalker?? Bet you saw some from the Love Boat)

And, for the 5 of you who can manage to watch a video of sailing, here’'s a short one.
I’'m waving from the cockpit at about 2:10
Again, turn the volume down (wind noise)...

    So that'’s it!
It took 20 days to go from Mex to Hawaii, then about 19 days to get from Hawaii to San Francisco.
Not too bad for a 34’' boat.

I think in milage, it was roughly 3000 miles out to Hawaii and a little less to get home
(maybe 2600 from Kauai to SF? haven'’t added it up yet).

We did have the pleasure of sailing an extra 1000 miles for nothing - when we first left Kauai, we were racing to leave before some rough weather was forecast.
Sailed our asses off and made great time. Then, at 2am on our 4th day out, the forestay broke (a crucial part of the boat'’s rigging).
The jib furler came crashing down onto the deck and we had a fun time trying to get it back on board.

Instead of trying to continue on (maybe losing the whole rig), we decided to turn around and sail back to Kauai.
Right into the bad weather we had tried to avoid! It was over 450 miles of hell.
Waves were breaking OVER the boat, we were slamming around inside, and it was pretty scary - 4 days of wishing I was any place else.
    Wheee! I’m a sailor! I’m sailing!
    :happay

Anyway, we fixed everything and things went fine the second time we left, but I could have done without the extra milage.
We got to do the worst part of the passage, 3 times!

Our biggest weather was off the California coast -
    from Cape Mendocino, down.
35+ knots of wind, 15 ft seas...
We were sailing at 14 knots, with just a double-reefed main (no jib!)

So, we’'re glad to be home.

    THE END.
Hope that wasn'’t too long and boring.
Mods, don'’t worry - that’'s it from me!
I forgot how much time these posts take...

Oh, and haha, when Matt went to check on the 990, he found a little mouse living in the glove box!
How do you know it’'s been too long since you'’ve ridden?
When there’'s varmits in your bike!
    :lol3

I shall leave you with a parting gift -
This song was popular on all of the islands and it got stuck in our heads.
    Stupid, but very catchy...

You'll be humming that one for a while...
    You're welcome!

Thanks for reading this you guys.

Is it a Seawind Catamaran? If so, I've always liked those boats!!

    Make broken forestays your favorite!

    :lol3 :lol3

If it makes you feel any better, I had to re-run a main halyard while rounding Cape Horn when I was 14 w/ my grandparents!! :eek1

Thanks for the update LittleWan. I was wondering what you guys did with your summer.

The sailing trip is far more adventurous than anything I could muster. You guys are so cool! I'm sure I'd be deathly sea sick within an hour. I did go sailing this summer for about two hours. We were on the Shtandart, a replica of a Russian Frigate from 1703.

kelly, perfect little sea adv update for the morning coffee, thanks!!! Awesome book end to the summer of stupid. Sorry about the scary mask issue leaving Hawaii :cry, but looking back now it's just all part of the adventure, right? :flug Mother nature really puts things into perspective.

Here was my view from 70ft above the water line, a lot less scary than 5ft. Sorry a little long and lame commentary at the end.

Wow, I can't get shit done lately.
Still on "island time" I guess. Plus, all I want to do is drink beer.
:lol3 Just kidding (we've been super busy).

Heh, I thought you guys would "enjoy" that one...
    :D

Edit: oh, if you copy that youtube link and then paste it in here, you can turn "Let's drink beer" into a mp3 and put it on your ipod!
    woo hoo!

Okay, so this is just a quickie post to address a couple things...

    Holy Crap!
Xymo, you're bowing to the wrong person -
Running a halyard while rounding Cape Horn?!?
    ALL HAIL PYRATE!
    :bow

Well, if you look back at the pic from Radio Bay (hilo), we're the 2nd boat from the left.
But, if you want another angle, here's a shot I took from the water...

Wow, I WISH it was a Seawind!
We met a guy in Mexico and went on his Seawind 1160 - that's an AMAZING boat.
And, it should be, for $500, 000!! :eek1

No, that's way out of our price range (even an old one)
we're on a gemini 105mc. Barely a catamaran, more like a monomaran (34 ft long, 14 ft wide)
She's a small, light, poundy thing (see above).
Great for Mex, but kinda scary in the open ocean.

Pardon the gratuitous Captain Ron (matt's favorite movie) :D

Heh, I love that you guys still make those jokes!
Even my mom and my aunt were emailing me that stuff in Hawaii ("make smashing into waves your favorite!")
    Everyone's a comedian...:huh
    :lol3

Haha, no kidding. BigWan plays kinda rough with his toys, eh? :bash
I'm just glad we didn't catch on fire (also a common theme)...

Hi Dave, cool pics! That must have been fun.
I've been reading so much Clive Cussler, I'm starting to appreciate those old ships now...

Wow! I've never been on a cruise ship, but what a view - thanks for the video!
Yeah, I'll bet it's a lot less scary from up there, for sure.

We saw a surprising number of ginormous container ships and tankers, out in the middle.
At least 6 of them crossed our path, within 3 miles.
Hello, we're thousands of miles from land, do you have to get so close??
Thank goodness for AIS (we have a receiver that shows nearby ships, their heading, their speed, and an approximate time of when they are going to run us over).

This one was less than half a mile away...it was huge!
we actually felt his wake when he passed.

    Hey,
Do you guys remember Dan? We saw him on the Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route, in Tollgate.

So I got a nice PM from a new inmate who lives near Dan and occasionally sees him "...walking around town, looking for the 60s..."
With the info from the inmate, I was able to track down a sample of Dan's flute music (it's pretty and relaxing) - you can enjoy it,
    here.
    Thanks, ghostwolf0!
(uh oh, I just noticed your screen name...hope i didn't offend you with my comment about "it's amazing how many guys named Dan like wolves and flutes..." :shog)

    Haha.
Okay you guys, it's been fun and I missed you, too...
But, this is it - I'm really pushing the RR rules now...
    :nono

However, I can't leave without one last present for nevermind:

Can't embed it, but take the tour, here.
    Enjoy!

Ooh, I see a bunch of new TAT reports I need to check out...
(it's so hard to catch up)

Sailing? Please don't let Bronco3738 read this. He's all about sailing. Sounds like a scary but exciting adventure. I am glad you two made it back to dry land safely.

We just returned from our second adventure in Utah (insert shameless plug of our RR here).

I can't wait for another Wan adventure to indulge myself in. :D

We're all about Stupidity here! I think we all went into withdrawals without out yearly dose of Wan Adventures. The sailing trip looked great. For some reason I can't get the wife interested in it. Sounded like you had a little more adventure than you wanted.

What's in Idaho? We still haven't made it to Colorado yet. We keep ending up in Utah.:lol3

    Little Wan,

I love the "Honu" video and have watched it a half-dozen times at least. The music sounds just like a Celine Dion favorite of ours. It sure fits perfectly to those scenes, I think. Anyway, it's really an awesome video for sure.

Thanks for staying in touch with us until your next big adventure. I'll be waiting and waiting.

ADV Sailing... Who knew? :dunno Jeez you think you are exposed being on a motorcycle in the middle of nowhere, but I imagine it's nothing compared to being in the middle of a huge storm in the ocean :eek1. Thanks for the update... I was wondering what you two would be doing this summer. Epic trip!
