Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising (1 August - 2 October 1944). The uprising is important for every Pole. Despite its dramatic effect (number of casualties is unknown, about 16,000 members of the Polish resistance were killed and about 6,000 badly wounded, between 150,000 and 200,000 Polish civilians died - mostly from mass executions), it is a symbol of heroism, hope and the desire for freedom.

Check out also the Andrzej Wajda wartime trilogy of A Generation, Kanal and Ashes and Diamonds.
I have only seen them in subtitled form (not speaking Polish) but very powerful and very moving.

Saddens me that Hollywood has totally ignored this event of massive and desperate measures to win back freedom for a population that had centuries of war brought to them. My late father was Polish from the south eastern part of Poland, he was in the AK fighting in the forests , in his opinion it was easier to fight in the forests rather than in the cities but of course that was his environment. In the last couple of years of his life i bought him a computer and sat with him looking at lots of material on Youtube, pictures of the defence in Poland during the war, he stared deep into the screen at the pictures, it really took him back. The coloured pictures posted above really bring the scenes to life. The only thing holding me back from visiting Poland, i have never been there, is that i don't speak a word of the language. Thank you for the post.:*sip*

You don’t need to speak Polish. You can easily communicate in English, it’s a most popular foreign language here.

That was an amazing event. It's extremely hard to grasp just how tragic. I can't imagine what that must have been like to live through it, or die there.

The casualty numbers of WW1 and WW2 are staggering if you pay attention. Single battle tolls are incomprehensible. We really don't deserve to live in paradise.

I understand the posts completely. I understand them so well, in fact, that your glib deflection doesn't surprise me in the least.
