Eight dual sport riders converge on the Central Oregon high desert for a three day off road adventure.

Thursday night we gather at a local watering hole for a meet and greet.

This is Robert from Seattle. He’s piloting a svelte KTM 690 Enduro.

Back for his fifth trip is Red from Carlsborg on the beautiful Washington Olympic Peninsula. Red’s riding a Honda XR 650 L. Ride Red!

This is Billy and Stacie Benedict from Bend. They operate Oregon Dual Sport and Adventures. If you need to rent a bike give them a call!

These fine folks, Mark and Lisa, made the trek from Ukiah, CA. Lisa’s riding a KTM 250 XCF-W and Mark is on a DR-Z 400.

Jim, from Prineville on a KTM 450, gets the “shortest distance travelled” award.

Also from Prineville, sweep rider Dave “the bad cowboy” on his trusty KTM 450.

Mark and Kyler, the two fine chase truck pilots from the wet side of the mountains.

…and me, staging out of Prineville, the high desert’s moto Mecca!

Day 1 starts bright and early in the morning…

Day 1 – Prineville to Christmas Valley, 150 miles or so.

We arrive at the staging area by 7 am. Getting bikes ready, packing chase truck, etc.

Lisa warming up to the 250.

Here’s Jeff from Portland on a WR 450. He arrived late last night and camped at the staging area.

    Group shot.

    And we are off!

Red with Robert on his heels.

    Jeff

Lisa, Mark and the Bad Cowboy.

My best attempt at an artistic pic. Would learn a lot more about this from Robert later in the trip.

Trail system heading south through Millican.

Taking a pit stop at the ruins of the “old stone house”. Lots of speculation and stories about how it was built and more curiously why here!

Around the corner we take a loosey goosey climb up the cinder cone. Here’s Jeff getting it done.

Red doing a disco dance then a disco crash!

Robert making another run at it on his high geared 690. This became an on the job “how to feather your clutch” training session!

    Gently now…

    Easy…

    …and gittin er done!

    Up at the top.

We roll off the top of the cinder cone and continue south. Trail conditions are great. We’ve had a lot of rain the last few days but as you can see the desert quickly absorbs the moisture!

Near Hwy 20 where we cross over and meander toward Kotzman Basin. Here’s Jeff with Robert kicking up some dust behind him.

Let’s head up there and check out the view.

Jeff arrives and flags me on.

Up at the top I set up for pics.

Great view back over the valley!

    Lisa.

    Mark.

    Robert.

And Dave, in Bad Cowboy Style!

    Mark and Lisa up top.

Crossing the rest of the basin. Not much out here but sage and old wagon roads!

Here comes Jeff, flagging me on.

I stop at the top of this vista point.

    Craggy, rough, volcanic out cropping.

Looking back. Find the rider’s dust trail.

Here comes Jeff taking the corner at speed.

    Robert, loving the E bike.

Red, spicing it up a bit.

Heading south we climb up into the pines. Break time.

Having some fun in the East Fort Rock trail system. Great riding! Great traction and almost zero dust!

Too much fun riding the twisty trail system to get many pics. We continue south having a blast!

Up next, Hole in the Ground, Fort Rock, the largest Juniper Tree in Oregon and Derrick Cave! Stay tuned…

Envious of your ride. Our group of three can only ride the thousands of miles in the Winema-Fremont National Forest east of Crater Lake. Hope your trail wanders down this-a-way. :nod

We exit the twisty trails and start riding more of this…

    And this…

On the way up to Hole in the Ground there is a long stretch of high speed cinder. I take my life in my hands with these pics as they roar past me.

    Jeff

    Robert

    Red

Lisa. BTW, she didn’t notice me until the last minute. Thought she was drifting my way awfully close!

    Mark

    And the Bad Cowboy.

We are all pretty pooped out and hungry. Mark and Kyler meet us at the top of HITG for lunch.

Worried that Jeff passed out mid sandwich. The chipmunks were starting to circle the wagon, so to speak.

    Pic of HITG.

Here’s a vid of the Hole. Gives you better perspective.

After a bite and a break we drop down into the hole.

    This was kinda gross.

Up and outa the HITG we adv it to Fort Rock which is nearby and was created by volcanic activity at the same time as HITG except Fort Rock was located in an ancient sea and HITG was not.

That’s Fort Rock in the distance. Be there in a minute or two.

Jeff appearing to be bar high in the pucker brush.

Fort Rock. It is amazingly bigger in real life.

    More to come…

Right place, right time, good little shooter. (TWSS)

ANYWAY, you have to be able to spell Canon correctly first!

Whatever you do DO NOT take any photo advice from hanksmybuddy. :deal

After Fort Rock we turn north and head back into the pines and old flowing wagon roads. Great scenery and super fun to ride. Gave us all a chance to shake of the post lunch sleepies. :ricky

Along the way we take a quick stop at the largest Juniper in Oregon. Impressive gnarly old girl.

Then a little further down the rutted up “public access” road is Derrick Cave, a massive lava tube!

Mark and Dave keeping an eye on things from the top.

Robert reliving part of his youth down below.

Old civil defense bunker built back in the 50s.

The day is getting on so we mount up and head south for our last blast into Christmas Valley.

Just in time for happy hour by the lake. :beer

Red with his one of a kind HDA wine glass!

After the world’s best hot water exfoliating shower, we head to dinner.

And then collapse into bed after a long day, exhausted and full! :bore

Up tomorrow, Christmas Valley, Fandango Canyon, Paisley, blow downs in the Fremont, Silver Lake and the world famous Cowboy Dinner Tree.
