What are you guys running on your bikes. Just trying to get a feel of what's out there.
I currently have Shinko E-804 front and E-805 rear. After 2000 miles they are both shot. They seemed pretty good when new, but went to hell quickly. Wish I had not bought them. They are cheap but wear extremely fast.
I will be installing GoldenTyre GT723 front and rear today.
Just blew through the TKC 80 I put on when I picked it up from the dealer. Lasted 2200 miles. Trying out the Motoz adventure tire now and hope it lasts a bit longer.
I've currently got a Shinko 700 front and Pirelli MT-90 rear mounted, which I ran on my Labrador/Newfoundland trip last fall. They now have about 7500 miles on them and need to be replaced. I really liked this combination for mixed dirt/paved road riding. They handled great on the gravel of the Trans-Lab and on paved twisties. I would definitely go with them again for another trip involving similar conditions, or if the AT were my only bike.
But since I have a Tiger 800 XC that handles better on pavement than the AT does, I'm going to put knobbier tires on the AT this time and use it for more dirt-focused rides. I have an IRC TR-8 front and TKC-80 rear waiting to go on.
I got 6500 miles out of my TKC80 on the front and 13000 miles on a Mefo Super Explorer on the rear with 50/50 road/dirt riding. Very impressed with the Mefo performance all around and the life I got out of it.
I've got about 2000 miles on a set of Motoz Tractionator GPS tires. I'm very impressed with these. They are a 50/50 tire and pretty similar to Heidenau K-60 Scouts as far as the class of tire and the tread pattern. But these Motoz tires handle better in everything I've encountered so far. They are quieter and smoother on the pavement (the Heidenau front is very loud on the highway). Great on turn in and feels very solid in the canyons fully leaned over on the side blocks. The rubber is softer and better grip than the Heidenau's especially on wet pavement where I had been pretty tentative about the Scouts. So, far wear looks non-existent but may not be as good as the Scout's which lasted 11K miles on a previous 1150GS I had. The Motoz feel better in loose gravel and the bit of sandy conditions I've been in. Have not been in mud on these and hope to never be but I would imagine they would not be as good as a TKC 80 and the like. Also ran Mitas E-07's on a previous S-10 and while I liked them, I think I prefer the Motoz to those as well. I think I've found the tire for me.
I noticed the Tractionator GPS tires are reversible to be either 50/50 or more dirt oriented. How have you installed yours?
They claim the rear tire can be run in 50%/50% mode or "mostly off road" I've got it mounted in 50/50 mode. The front does not have that option.
That depends where you're riding. I'm currently all on the road, and have Pirelli Scorpion Trails (originals) on the bike. They're excellent, no worries wet or dry. 2k miles and virtually no wear! Still, I'm also getting 60 odd mpg / 12.2 miles per litre!
In my search I seem to find 90/10 tires
and 50/50 tires.
Can someone suggest something in between?
I am not sure how I managed, but I was able to get 6000 miles out of my Shinko 804/805 tires. I spent probably 90% of the tires life, on the road. I was very pleased with them and ended up buying a second set. We shall see how long these last. The front on the first set started cupping and I had a flat one morning so I replaced them. Was going to try to get another 1000 out of them but chose to replace instead.

Shinko has a full offering, take a look if nothing else to give you an idea...805 is their ADV knobby, 244 probably 50/50, 700 maybe 70/30, 705 maybe 80/20 or 90/10.
The ratios anyone provides (incl. manufacturer) are absolutely subjective and serve only as a guide of course, it's really just a matter of comparing treads and thinking about your terrain, bike, and needs/wants.
So don't limit your search based solely on some ratio. That being said you might look at Shinko 700, Motoz Tractionator GPS, Pirelli MT90 and similar tires with overall round profile but some knobbish-ness to the tread unlike say a Shinko 705 which is essentially a street tire with larger spaces in the treads than an actual street tire.
The Dunlops that come stock on the AT are 90/10. The Shinko 705 is realistically a 70/30 when compared with other options on the market. The 700 (which can only be fit to the front wheel of an AT; rear doesn't come in the right size) is more of a 60/40.
Another good option is the Pirelli MT-90, which is also 70/30ish, and does come in AT sizes.
How narrow of a tire would safety work on the AT rear rim?
Continental TKC 70 is a 70/30 tire. So is the Shinko 705 or they may classify that as a 80/20.
How about K60, Karoo 3, or E07 rear? TKC80 or MT21 front? Is the 90/90-21 MT21 speed - rated high enough?
I got about 8000 km out of mine and were very pleased with them as well both for tarmac and dirt. Will be fitting a new set after my current tires wear out.
Now running Conti Trail Attack IIs and they are excellent road tires and look like they will last a LONG time.
