Loved the photos and the report - thank you from Missoula, Montana! You've a way with fun photos and words. :) Have covered some of those bases while in pursuit of Munros and other adventures. Hoping to revisit and expand to some of the areas you've shared via two wheels instead of four. Brilliant!

Next stop for you . . . Montana's back roads! You'll find some beauty in common with Northern England and Scotland . . .

Oh, god, you're killing me. First, I thought "Oh, maybe he'll get north of Edinburgh." Never did I hope to see the Outer Hebrides and Shetland, not to mention all the other Highland locales you tagged. The single malts and Inverness bookstore were really nice additions. And you stayed in hostels! Nothing beats the SYHA for some un-freaking-believable hostels. Those rustic hostels in the Outer Hebrides are some of the most memorable places I've spent a night in my 46 years. I remember staying in the Lerwick hostel, nursing a hangover and watching the locals lawn bowling in the park across the street 23 years ago. :gerg

Thank you for the nice pics and bringing to mind a lot of fond memories. :clap

Thank you all for the kind words.

No locals at 5am, just a hangover.

Hostels are between £13 - £20 a night, and the four ferries in the Shetlands cost a total of £10.

The pics from Lockgolhead look like the place where Hamish McBeth was filmed (BBC series with Robert Carlyle).

Martin, thanks much for sharing. I'm writing this from a motel room in Pratt, Kansas, waiting for 3 inches of snow to blow through...springtime in the Midwest. Really enjoying your gusto cause later this month will pick up my 'other' Transalp in Cork, Ireland, and will be exploring many of the spots you've just enjoyed.

Is there a website you use for hostel chasing?

    Again, thanks,

    Stephen

This is a great report and the pictures are amazing. Did you take them all with your GoPro? You had a pretty wide angle lens. I have spent a little time in England but never made it further north than Edinburgh. I guess I need to go back! Thank you for sharing! :freaky

Thanks Jim. I'm not using a gopro, rather a micro 4/3rds DSLR with a wide lens on the bike, and an assortment off it. Much grief with dirt on the sensor, and for the last few days have had a malfunction with the shutter - hence the lack of pictures on day 19. Camera will need to go back for repairs :(

Hi Stephen, thanks. I've been staying in official YHA/SYHA hostels - other than one in Orkney which sounded better. There is a website https://www.hihostels.com/ however I picked up a map with their locations marked, which I keep with my road map. This way I could wait until around noon to pick a final destination depending on progress etc. I've only had two nights where they were full.

Great ride report! Will be hoping to tour that area in the summer at the start of a longer tour, and your pictures are the perfect inspiration!

You say you're using a micro 4/3rds DSLR. How has your experience been with this camera? My girlfriend is hoping to film our trip and we're looking into different equipment options....She was thinking about a Canon Mark II, but she thinks it may be a bit bulky.....?

    Thanks,

    Joel
