So I wanted to make sure that this trip was actually happening before posting about it. I write this in front of a campfire on Day 2 of my solo Trans America Trail journey from NYC to Oregon. I am following gpsKevin’s route and doing so on my not-so-trusty Husqvarna 701.

The trip started off the worst way possible. My rear brake lever stop bolt backed out causing 70mph brake drag and a melted caliper. I spent the first night at my buddy Steve Kamrad’s house and then went to Solid Performance KTM the next day. I can’t say enough good things about these guys. They replaced the caliper and also fixed a few other outstanding issues at a super fair price. Their expertise is truly priceless, especially on a trip like this.

After getting on the road and picking up the trail around Mechanicsburg, PA life was good again. As soon as I hit the dirt, it made all the preparation and drama worthwhile. I rode the trail down to Caledonia State Park, ate wings at Greenwood Tavern, and then set up my first campsite. I am feeling good and looking forward to life on the TAT!

I will do my best to write you guys an update each night. I am also filming as well so hope to be able to share some fun footage at some point. I will be doing my best to camp the whole way, but am not so rude to turn down any offered hospitality!

I just completed sections 1&2 of the NMBDR on my '18 701. In my opinion it's the perfect bike for this type of riding. BTW before I rode mine I replaced the clutch slave with an Oberon which is the same model I had my 501. Best of luck to you.

Nice! I am loving mine so far on the trail. It’s been pretty easy/fast going so far. These bikes love ripping up dirt roads. I look forward to more challenging trails ahead.

I'm in. Looking forward to the story and pics. I hope you can make it all the way, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Colorado passes are closed. Good luck from S. Mississippi.

Cell service mandated I took a little break from posting. Day 3 I made it down to Harrisonburg, VA. My friend Tyler of Triumph of Harrisonburg was playing with his band at a local brewery so I got a hotel for the night in town The day’s ride was fast and easy again, but very scenic. Lots of smooth dirt roads through the forest.

Day 4 was a bit more of a challenge. I left Harrisonburg a bit late and hungover headed back up to the trail in Brandywine. I met some other adventure riders at the gas station there headed north on the MABDR. As soon as I got on the trail in Brandywine, I could tell it was going to be a fun day. It started off with a couple cold water crossings which definitely helped shake off the cobwebs.

I got some really good footage on my Insta360 One R that I edited together and posted on my Instagram (@bgrhymes). The trail definitely progressed. I started to get some elevation and hit a bunch of fire-road switch backs through the mountains. Pretty remote up there for sure. I wish I had never seen that damn cougar video because every bend I expected to see one waiting for me.

Sadly, I also had my first “off” today. :-( No harm, no foul though. I do it a lot. The Highway Dirtbike Handguards are the truth!

As I came off the mountains into Covington I stopped to see if I could get a camping spot or hotel room close by, but no dice. I ate at Cucci’s the local favorite Italian restaurant and then headed back up the trail. Once I got about five miles out of town I found a run off, rode up, turned the lights off and made camp. Pretty sure it was not legal camping land so I kept it quiet.

I think the last TAT trip I followed was the Kiwis on the Groms. Count me in.

early winter-like weather on most of the TAT route west of the Mississippi, and on 10/18 our TAT rider hadn't cleared Virginia.
