I hate redundancy.....only use a pump...and another reason I hate tubliss.......you need to pack tubes just in case you have a sidewall flat.
Respect for you too, but you were probably hurting the tube somehow. I carry one spare 21" UHD tube and it works great, I've even put one in a rear tire because I was out of fresh tubes in the garage...ran it for thousands of miles.
I carry a hand pump as a primary air source and co2 for that rare flat when it's hot and you could die if you don't get moving. I never air up/down. Little bikes get ridden everywhere at 20 psi and the big bikes get ridden everywhere at 36 psi.
I also carry a basic patch kit, I've found that the modern dry patches work really well and work trail side unlike a rubber cement patch which really needs a couple of hours to cure. Go to a bicycle shop for the latest bestest stuff.
I've wondered about those dry patches from bicycles if they would work well enough. good for small holes. Guess they do.
Co2 mini pump. Amazon has them for about $15.
They are a small hand pump with a Co2 built in the same compact pump.
It gives you the ability to use either.
Time constrained or too tired to pump, just use the Co2.
Slow leak that requires a little air every hour, just use the pump.
It packs small and gives you options...
Going to grease the stem and swing arm bearings. While i have it down going to check all nuts and bolts.
As I'm another DRZ400 rider planning on conquering the TAT in 2014, can anyone chime in on any "high fail" items they've experienced? I'm specifically interested in engine/fuel/electrical related components that could be replaced or upgraded while I still have my bike torn down.
I have never had any failures on my DRZ 400 period other than clogged jets from old gas and a open circuit battery but my friend who did the western portion of the TAT with me last year had his DRZ stator fail. Now the bike WILL run with a dead battery if you can pull it off, or jump it off. Based on his experience I installed an auxillary kick starter kit on mine. The karma of spending the money to do this more than likely will prevent me from ever having to use it!
I like the idea of the kickstart, but not sure I want to spend the coin at this time.
Will be doing the trip with others and I carry a small set of jumper cables (that have served me well on atv rides)
Research the two piece valves. Good friend of mine had it happen to him, valve head came off the stem and trashed the entire engine, rod through the cases and everything. I've always said that if I were to buy a DRZ400 that I'd immediately remove the head and install one piece stainless valves. Other than that it's a good solid bike.

You want to see what a full preparation of a DRZ looks like check my link, some may think it was over the top, but I made it there and back to KY with no problems. (5,000 miles)
Grease ALL bearings, and replace any suspect ones. Check bearing seals too. Head set, wheel bearings, swing arm bearings.
Case guards are a must. carry extra foot levers, (brake and clutch). Counter shaft seal o-ring and spacer. (mine was new when started and was weeping in OR)
Check coolant hoses.
I replaced the stator before I left and lock tight those bolts...along with counter shaft nut.
Steel chain rings!!!!!! And bring another CS sprocket (14T and 15T) along with nut and locking tab thing.
Spare throttle and clutch cables...

Made side racks for the new wolfman bags.
I think they will work well. Now just need to get them and the rack powder coated.

I have my date set for the first week of June, 2014.
So far on schedule.
Looked at all your posts and never came across what your date to leave was.
We will be riding in June also but dont have a hard date yet. A friend that will be going is currently overseas.
I just have to be back by the end of Aug.
Was allowing 3 months and going solo cause i do like to explore.
I just have some sort of premonition that I should not go solo.
That is all the time the clients i have will let me be gone.
NO I didn't have any issues with the levers. Broke the chain as it was too tight. It's all in the RR.
Leaving in early June then most likely the CO passes won't be clear yet.
How do we find out if the CO passes are open before we go?
someone once posted a link to that But I don't remember. It had only been clear less that a week when I went through (July 7th). Marshal pass wasn't an issue , but Calif, Cinnamon and Ophir were. Of course it all depends on the snow fall.
They were closed on out departure date (June 7th), but only by 8 or so inches if memory serves me right.
