As Win said, Rock-1, OEM skid plate-0...

I tried to avoid a loose paver sized rock in the middle of the trail but hit it anyway. Thinkin’ the front wheel launched it into the skid plate when I went over it. The thin OEM skid plate did little in deflecting the rock, instead the rock dented the skid plate into the engine case.

Sorry to hear about the classic Yammie. You do know you could have just slid the monkey behind your seat and carried it for a spare, right?

Hooefully not too soon on that comment :fishie
The end of one adventure usually signals the beginning of another.
From the looks of the roads you were on it’s hard to imagine that kind of injury. Bummer though any way you look at it.

~ POD: Make my way north to the Rocket City to meet fellow inmate @klaviator...

Win and I only knew each other from the Day Trippin' ride reports and we've shared a few posts here and there since December 2017. In reading Win's "You Only Live Twice" ride report, I found that we had a few things in common. We served in the same profession, lived in the same places throughout the states and abroad, and shared the passion of riding motorcycle... I chuckled as I read some of his escapades in his YOLT reports. I knew I had to meet Win at some point and I tried last year on the way out to Florida and again on my way home in February 2021 but severe winter storms prevented my travels north.

Since I was already in Texas to see the bluebonnets and have some THC bbq, I was just a hop, skip, and a jump to Florida to check up on my parents. We'll what's another 700 mile detour north to meet Win and get the chance to ride some goat trails. I checked the weather and clear skies were called for Huntsville from 19-21 Apr so I shot Win a pm to set-up a meetup...

Florida always sends me off with some rain...

After cleaning the campsite site I was able to get the tent set up... Win would swing by so we could discuss our plans for the next two days and we ended up talking for few hours... Nothing in particular but we went all over the map; Huntsville, SoCal, our former profession, riding, retirement, photography, and more... By the time Win left, the sun started dipping in the horizon along with the temperature... good thing he lived only a few miles from the campgrounds... I was looking forward to riding some of the "goat trails" in his ride reports... :ricky

~ POD: Meet up with Win at 9am for a ride through Ardmore, TN through some of his favorite roads and trails...

I was looking forward to riding around with Win today. Coming from the west coast, I admired some of the "goat trails" in his ride reports. It was a gorgeous spring day, cool at first and warmed in the afternoon. Win led the ride to Ardmore, TN where we got onto country backroads... I had the GoPro mounted on the helmet anticipating that we'd be riding around and stopping for photos here and there... good thing with what happens later...

let's go to the instant replay... (non-pannable)

youtube is having a tough go processing this video even at 4K... found the reason below...

Update: "YouTube has a problem with busy screens that are full of small, rapidly moving objects that are similar in color......... The same problem would happen if you shot a video of cycling along a forest path - the leaves and grass would look awful."

after I hit the rock I was thinking to myself "maybe I should stop and have a look..." but I was having too much fun on the goat trails... but as the we rode along the voice grew louder and louder... finally Win stopped...

An expletive came from my mouth but reality shortly hit me like a ton of bricks. How am I going to get this back to camp? :scratch Luckily I packed the XT-250 ready for any ride with self recovery gear, spare parts, a pint of oil, tools, tube, and more. After some critical thinking... :lol3 OK, time to break out the JB Weld and get your qualification box checked off...

tried laying the XT on the side to save some oil in the case but it was already too late...

    27.jpeg

The instruction said three minutes for the JB Weld to set and one hour until you can drill, tap, and machine... we waited the one hour before putting the oil back into the case. The true test would be when I kicked over the engine. Sure enough she fired on the first kick. We discussed taking it easy at 35 mph to limp back home. Win Followed me for three stops checking each time to see if the case was leaking. Nada, zip... Great I thought as we rode along to Huntsville. Win took the lead and we went faster at 45 mph. Still nothing... Finally at one of the stops I pulled up next to Win so we could have lunch and wouldn't you know it, at the next stop the case starts leaking. I jinxed myself with the call for lunch... It was straight to the campgrounds then... I made it no problem and Win would text me later for diner at his house...

I arrived at Win's house at around 5pm and he pulled out his Majesty and Like 150i for me to test ride around the neighborhood. I opted for the Like to see how light the handling was on it. Win made it a point to explain that the left lever was not a clutch but the rear brake since I have never ridden a scooter. After a short tutorial, I was off on my first scooter ride. The Like reminded me of riding my Honda Monkey in terms of handling. Win had come up with a game plan to ride the scooters since my XT-250 was out of action so this was an intro for tomorrow's adventures. After getting the bikes put away, it was time for diner which his wife Debbi prepared. Win's mother also joined us. I had a great time getting to know Win's family... Thanks Win...

Afterwards we went down to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge to get some sunset photos by the river. This is how we ended our day...

Damn shame about the case Rudy. While you are waiting to find another one I have a suggestion. Clean the paint off the case down to clean metal. Use a two part epoxy glue to stick an aluminium sheet patch in place over the hole. Reinstall the "bash" plate with a piece of dense foam pressing against the patch. This should stop any leaks for as long as it takes to find a case and keep the bike usable instead of being a garage ornament. Good luck...Dave

I was just thinking about the very subject... cleaning that area really well with contact cleaner and reapplying JB Weld in a clean environment...

Thanks for the tip about cleaning the paint off the case for better adhesion...

At least I know the XT will run as long as I plug that break in the case...
