I've already bought my plane ticket. Going to Japan (from USA) in June. I'm looking to rent a bike (probably an Africa Twin) and ride around japan for 4-5 days (visit Mt Fuji, eat Kobe steak in kobe, visit Hiroshima and whatever else looks interesting). The rental company does not offer a GPS. I'm having difficulty finding a GPS that has maps for Japan. I would like to buy something I can use in the USA as well as Japan (as well as other countries). The Tomtom rider 550 does not have maps for Japan. Any help?

Dont need a GPS, download MapsMe and map of Japan on your Iphone/Android. Will give you offline turn by turn and points of interests.

It worked 97% of time for me in Nepal and Mongolia so it will work perfectly in Japan..
    .

Did i mentioned it is all free ? App and Maps..

POI's are as good as the person that uploaded them... and the amount of time since the upload vs your query plays a big part in that. a business may change names / locations a half a dozen times in a decade. it's a REALLY good idea to verify locations you want to use for fuel/lodging over the phone, or at least google reviews. POI's really cannot be trusted to be current. :-)

Download and give it a go. In general, it locates motels, gas, stores, etc just fine.

It did twice take me to a motel that was abandoned or was now a new subdivision in east Russia, so not perfect but works well enough.

But in modern Japan, will be difficult to be completely lost / remote..

Don't forget to ride on the "wrong" side of the road. That might be toughest part. :eekers :p3rry

That riding on the wrong side of the road can be problematic, I find that when surprised and doing some type of emergency maneuver, I go to the right....bad idea in Japan!

I do want a dedicated GPS that mounts. I really like the Garmin 595LM, but garmin does not have a map of Japan. I reached out to them and they said I should be able to download a third party map. Anyone have any experience doing this?

Thanks. Ordered the Garmin 595LM. Hopefully I can play with it soon. Also ordered a super cheap laptop to dump video footage and pictures onto/edit videos with and a 5 TB external hard drive to take with me. Going to pick up a go-pro and document my trip the best I can. I'll create a new thread on here when I go and update with pictures and video to the best of my abilities.

I would skip the laptop, buy 3-4 extra batteries for the gopro (or whatever camera) and several 32Gb cards. 100-200 dollars worth of sdcards is a lot easier to carry, and if you crash the bike the sdcards will survive, a laptop, maybe not. :-)

1 Month to go. I have my bike lined up, GPS ready and have a friend there to order me a tent and sleeping bag. Tested the gopro on my helmet. The quality is amazing. Now I need to learn a few Japanese phrases. Its going to be a good time!
