So my friend "Dead Bird" and I both own TW200's and a mutual friend of ours is getting married next month... His bachelor party was a weekend of camping down in Southern Ca. Half way between home and the party location, Leo Carillo State Beach, lies the beautiful Oceano Sand Dunes just south of Pismo. Dead Bird and I couldn't decide whether we should ride down on our 650's or throw the T-Dubs in the truck and pull the pop-top down. The recent drop in Diesel fuel prices and the fact that the camper would be nice to have at an event such as the B-Party made the decision final. We were to leave a couple days early and have ourselves a stop-over in Pismo to give these little bikes a true sand test.

The weather was abnormally warm... We passed the cleanest truck on 101!

    Very Shiny!

We got down to the beach just before sundown unsure if it was a good idea to pull the camper down on to the sand in a 2 wheel drive truck. Once we saw the beach.... No problem, we thought, it looks like a hard-pack road.

Pretty easy driving but looking at the ocean I wondered if we were there at low tide, and just how much it would rise that night. In a 2wd truck I couldn't go very far up in to the soft sand without digging in and spinning the tires. Dead Bird suggested that we just go camp down the road at the campground instead of out on the beach.

Sunset and a minus tide... A nice arrival.

So we went back out on the pavement and down the road to the state campground. Set up the Wheel Estate under a full moon and relaxed.

After a good night's sleep and a little breakfast it was time to unload the bikes and go buy some dune flags... When we bought the flags we didn't really know if our little bikes would even have a chance of getting up the dunes. The 2 wheel drive truck wanted to sink instantly in the soft stuff and these little TDubs sure don't have much power.... It's not like some 2-smoker with a paddle tire or anything, but they do have fat tires.

Next up.... The Tdubs hit the sand....

Thanks. It's been a great rig and will be for a long time.

Now, on with some riding pics....

As I said, we had some breakfast and bought some sand flags... then headed down to the beach to see what we could do. Oddly enough neither on of us had ever ridden at Pismo, and I had never ridden anything on 2 wheels in sand of this magnitude.

The Beach was beautiful, the wind was off-shore, and the waves were as tempting as the dunes.

It was also obvious that we had mad a good decision to camp in the campground as opposed to the beach. The Tide definitely got higher than my truck could have pulled the camper.

This guy could have thought it out a little better too...

How bout some salt and sand in those anti-lock brakes and custom shiny
    wheels?

The T-dubs took us anywhere we wanted to go. One surprise after another. These little bikes absolutely ripped up the sand.

    On the way up.

Back down at the shore for some trials and ocean play... All these pics are Dead Bird.

    Then disaster struck......

    Dead Bird fell over.
    But he got back up
    [IMG]

Then we went back up for some more deep stuff.

And back down for some more sliding around at the shore.

I am greatly entertained, my family has a TW and I took it out to the dessert once and I had just tons of issues in the sand.

Did you guys air down your tires? or leave them at stock pressure?
I've been to Pismo but only to party cuz I don't want to ride my bike in that much sand without a paddle tire and a steering stabilizer

But great ride report glad you guys had fun!

Ez (Dead Bird) is having technical difficulties upload his pics so he sent me a link.

Here are his pics. All of my pics are of him, as most all of his are of me.... We shoulda traded cameras.

Airing down the tires... 13 to 14 psi wirked really well for us.

That looks like great fun, neepunk! :clap

Wouldn't have thought the T-dubbs have enough beans to handle sand that well. We have family near Pismo (Santa Maria) and will have to take ours out there some time.

We use 'em as shuttle mules when we go canyoneering. Here are a couple pics from Zion.

You've got to get those little sweeties up there. My wife has one too and she's totally looking forward to getting out there on the beach. Just get some flags and air the tires down below 15 lbs. You'll have a blast!
