Hope she enjoys the bike as much as we did!
Hey guys- my neighbor just hung a shingle above his shop: https://www.upperformancecycles.com/
I serve on the volunteer fire department with him, real good guy. Although he seems to focus on harleys and royal enfields, I suspect he'll probably work on anything. I see him out and about in his ural or on various japanese makes as well.
Plus he's maybe 20 yards off the UPAT.
Nice, hope he does well.
I am a weekend Yooper. I ride the western UP.
I know your lives up there are greatly influenced by the lakes.
My newest pannier sticker partly explains why you folks enjoy life next to the big water.
Yoopers....and riders that have done the UPAT. I'll be riding(upat) and remote camping for 4 or 5 days this July ALONE. Being new, 2 yrs, to Michigan and not having visitied the UP yet, what if any precautions for bears should I plan for? I haven't seen any info that would make me plan to carry on the trip(everyone just talks about how lovely it is) but I've also hiked Wyoming and been stalked by a mountain lion. I don't want to end up as bear poop if there are even bears of that size. Again, please excuse my ignorance but I haven't see that mentioned.
I wouldn't worry about 'em. Try not to leave any food out at night that might attract them and if you see one, just leave it alone.
Chances are if you even see one, it'll be trying to get away from you as fast as it can.
Last fall I had one trying to get into the garbage bin on our deck. I yelled "HEY BEAR, GO AWAY" out the screen door. He did so promptly.
You'll be fine.
Mosquitoes will be your toughest challenge!
Though I'm a troll I've been Blessed with many bike, hike, camping and hunting trips all over the UP.
The few bear we've seen over the years were gone in a heartbeat.
That said we always keep our camp clean and food elsewhere.
I've had some interesting conversations with locals about the 600-700 wolves that call the UP home ... seems encounters are rare but make one pay attention when they happen lol.
That said our small group of UPAT travelers is looking forward to a great June adventure!
Have camped all over michigan and never had a issue with bears except for when I had a string of fish in the lake on a live chain.Damn bear stole them.Bring 30% deet that time of year.
Thanks all. I was told the week im going (July 7 to 12th ish) would be between the black flies and skeeter seasons? Haha.
Any of you Yoopers riding this weekend?
My wife and I are heading up on Friday. Toying with going out to Point Abbaye. May camp out there. I've pretty much been all over the UP, never been out there. Then likely will work our way East on AAA etc. Towards Marquette.
Anyhow, if you see a KTM 990 two up, that would be us. Wave us down!
Current plan is to spend the weekend at our cabin over by Curtis.
Debating....do I bring the bikes or the boat?
Can I camp here? I can't find any info saying I can not...
People camp out there. Last fall there was an FJ with a rooftop tent set up when I rode out to the point.
High Rock Bay - popular camping location. Regular stop on some UP CannonTreks.
Thanks guys, I'm starying to plan my overnight stops and trying to remain semi remote. July 7th to 10th if anyone else is going to be in the area.
So....the weather is finally starting to warm up a bit....I almost have the KTM back together after a rear bearing failure.....and the forecast for the coming weekend looks pretty good.
Anyone up for a ride this coming weekend?
We can do a slower paced, shorter ride or a longer moderate paced ride, depending on what people are interested in. I have fun doing either.
I have some tracks we can follow, or if someone has a really cool loop they want so show off, we can do that.
Please remember...this is a "join at your own risk" ride.
What day are you thinking? Saturday? I wanted to go camping this weekend. Might be able to drive up to Marquette Friday after work, and meet whomever Saturday morning and go riding. I assume your riding the 640?
