What's the point of being able to split the TDC locating tool in half like that?
It's made that way to insert the spring. One spring in the center applies force to both pins. Unless something happens to the spring you'd probably never split the unit. I did so just to provide some photographic evidence of how it was put together.

It's been a while, but I finally have a picture of the last tool. It was back ordered and took the longest time to get to me.
This tool is used with an un-pictured sleeve to set the appropriate timing chain tension when adjusting valves. Notice that the black inner section is threaded. There is also an internal spring. This replaces the normal cam chain tensioner. The inner section is then tightened until you feel a click/release 3 times. I assume that there is some kind of internal cam mechanism that gives the click and release.

Anyone require shim change at 12000 miles?
My new DVD for the water cooled series opposed twins came today. Covers the GS, GSA and RT. Also has an up date feature to click on if needed. And, it has a serial number. You must register with the number to use the disk. When you do this it says you have two computer registrations left. Don't be making copies for your friends or ebay. They will be no good with out registering unless your some kind of good hacker. A little intellectual property protection, which is a good thing in general. Now they have incentive to keep producing factory DVD's for the peons. I wonder if the European version has the serial number also?
Mine didn't at 12,000 miles and I have yet to see or hear of anyone's GSW needing shims.
I need to get me a set of those high-end BMW tools.

Jim, I have one of those after-market high tech tools like that, but it didn't even raise the wife's eyebrow when she found the receipt for it wadded up in my trouser pocket.
I need some tools that will make me homeless....... for at least a weekend.

I ordered the factory service DVD on the day I bought my 2014 GSA. It has not come in yet...I used Jim's DVD to complete my 600 mile service. And I'm sure I'll have it long before I need to check the valve clearance! But just for giggles, can someone confirm the following....
It appears to me that if the cam timing is correct, the flats of the cams will be parallel at TDC. So, conversely, a simple check to determine whether or not the cam timing is off is if those flats are NOT parallel at TDC. Of course, this presupposes one is precisely at TDC...but that can be easily determined with a wooden or plastic dowell...after all...the spark plugs are going to be removed at this point anyway, right?
I, personally, would rather buy the tools and do it myself than be at the mercy of a dealer. I admit a higher than average amount of paranoia, but sometimes I wonder if techs are really doing things completely according to the manual, or if they're just winging it. But for the average guy, if my above theory were correct, it would serve to definitively tell him if the cam timing was in need of adjustment or not. If not, then he could either get the tools, or take it to the dealer for that procedure.
Keep the factory service DVD and cancel the order for Jim's DVD.
If you're trying to start an argument about how incompetent most BMW master technicians are, you're probably going to have to find a different forum.
I'm not trying to start any arguments, but I can see how my statement could have sounded that way. I'm sure the vast majority of BMW techs are competent. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. But they don't care about my bike as much as I do...that's just the way it is! And when I'm working on my bike in my own shop, I'm not under pressure to get a job done in some specified amount of time. Those are two advantages in my favor. Combine those with 40 years of maintaining and repairing my own cars and motorcycles leaves me pretty confident that I'm up to the task of doing my own maintenance and non-warranty work, and doing it as well as the BMW mechanics. I won't be as fast as they are, I'm sure...but I don't have to be.
Still, this is my first Boxer engine, and knowing I'd need to do the break-in maintenance before I had the DVD, I bought Jim's DVD. I liked it a lot, and I'd recommend it, but I still want the service DVD. I get factory service manuals for everything I own, and have for many years. There are a lot of things in there beyond maintenance procedures. Cam timing procedures, for one.
If you do your own maintenance, and repairs, then you really should have the factory DVD. My DVDs only cover the service work and some maintenance actions, but the factory DVD covers everything, as well as all the torques and specs.
