Grab, on that road where the tag was. The key chain was gone.

New tag. 13.6 miles from Dry river store, from the store head south, take the first immediate road on the right, head west and turn left on the dirt road, fox something, then go to union springs road and ride up in the mountains. From there head towards flag pole.

Look for a forked tree at the base of a big rock 17 paces off the road at around 13.6 miles total from the store.

At the base of the forked tree is the squirrel.

Soooo....I tried to get this...on the MTS1200...with Michelin Road 5 tires...and I truly lived up to the Motto: taking inappropriate equipment to out of the way places!

I then followed up with the wrong tag thread on here...I naturally replied to the Hardcore WV-MD-PA Tag thread. In short: the Road 5 is a great tire, but not that great. It was the first trip I've made in quite a while where I was seriously wondering if I could walk back out by dark. I need a different bike for this. But if the tag is still here by the time I have to put new shoes on the bike, I might just try to make a point of it.

Pictures of the attempt would be great.

There were a few links to google drive pictures in the linked post, but here's an uploaded one. This is the ledge I got stuck at/on:

I've seen many bikes taking dirt naps there. You were doing well to get that far on that bike.

There's a steep, rocky uphill after that section, correct?

I thought the rocky uphill was more difficult.

I'm tickled to see that somebody made an effort here. Well done.

I can tell you, I am unwilling to take my Vstrom up there. I think your decision to turn around was the right one.

Nope, at least, not as far as I walked...I needed to take a break and cool off, so after I took that pic and pulled off some gear, I walked up a ways to see if it was just going to get worse. I was pretty well up on the ridge top, and from what I can tell looking at the topo map and the .2mi of trail I walked out from there, it didn't seem too much worse. Now, I had just come DOWN a very steep rocky section, which I had to reverse through. Looking closely at the topo, however, there were a few more peaks to go up/down before getting on the "gravel" part of FS86.

I could easily see winding up taking a dirt nap, but I was quite pleasantly surprised by how well the multi did. I simply ran out of traction. I could have taken a much faster run at that ledge and tried to carry it over with inertia, but I really needed to hit a very narrow spot and hit it just right. I just didn't feel up to it. I did spend about 30 minutes there before giving up and turning around, making multiple attempts. Unfortunately, I've got the HD compound on the tires (trying to get more than 4.5k out of a tire) and it was just a no-go - not enough weight.

I took my old DL1000 through some stuff like this, and it was OK, but not great...again, tires would have made the bigger difference to me than the weight. Aired-down TKC80s and I'd have been in like flynn. I should have checked the roads more carefully. But this really confirms my itch for a DR650.

@mtnflow I could see your tire marks quite clearly more than a few times.

You didn't go far enough to get to the steep rocky parts. The parts Waynej mentioned are there but just before you get to the road headed down to the lake. If I were to take the 1190, I would go flag pole to union, not union to flag pole.

Most likely not my tracks, lots of people we don't know go through there. There were tracks when I went.

If someone knew if the squirrel was there... it would most likely not be there..... but somewhere else at this point..

An attempt was made. Couldn't find squirrel, not saying it's not there. Snow on the ground made it a bit tricky, especially when I realized I had gone down union springs instead of heading to Switzer and had to turn around and scramble up that last hill. 20200307_123207.jpg

I was so totally there, but didnt see the key. I figured someone else must have been by and I would see a new post today. But no. Looking again at your post, you put stuff over it AND THEN the rock on the stuff.

No worries. I was in the City truck anyway. I wouldn't have claimed the tag. Just curious, but now that I know to look UNDER the other stuff...
