While the backroads on Southern Vancouver Island are being closed off with an ever increasing number of gates, the Northern half of the Island remains pretty much unchanged, with few gated roads and where there is a gate it is usually open.. The difference is that the Dunsmuir land swindle deal never made it past the mid Island.. In hind site it is a good thing that the railroad never made it further north on the Island..

Pretty much the reason I got rid of my more dirt-oriented KLR and got a more street-oriented VStrom.
My gravel riding areas were mostly around Alberni and Qualicum. It's so bad in Alberni with clearcuts and gates to me it's not worth it anymore. I can still do a few loops
i.e. Sproat Lake to Nahmint Lake and back along the Alberni Inlet... but really that's about it. Horne Lake to Fanny Bay along Cook Creek Main is still open near Qualicum, but really, the good riding on the Island is definitely Campbell River and beyond. Albeit there is much logging, there are also many great forestry campsites and wide open access.

Did the final pre-ride to catch the sections that were snowed in several weeks back, and was able to get through... I sent the track file in for processing and will do a TCAT route section write up on it in the near future..

It was our first bit of rain in a while Sunday evening, but lucky I had a 3 hour lull to set up and crawl in the tent before it started up again.. IMG_2431.JPG Sunday night..

First thing in the AM flat, this was my 3rd one this year... Of coarse the damp weather brought out the beastly insects and they fed well while my hands were occupied..
IMG_2463.JPG Still a nice ride even with the clouds..

This is a piece of paradise, but there is only a limited number of camping spots so it is often full..

Did some sidetrips on the Mount Abel side, this was as far as I could go on this road..

Gunnerbuck, where is this lake? Looks like maybe Victoria Lake but I have never seen it calm like that.

This is Anutz lake, it is typically a windy lake during the day, but as soon as nightfall comes and the thermals drop, it becomes quiet and still

    Hello Gunnerbuck,

I met you quickly in front of Spunky's last summer, I was on the rough looking KLR with Yukon plates.

Thanks to the craziness going on right now I have several unplanned weeks off. Re-bumping this thread. Plan to spend several days, starting after the 25th, seeing how many of the routes are open. Maybe try some camping. Will post what I find! Rode Comox Lake to Port Alberni yesterday in the sunshine,, and up a look out over the lake, the roads were great with only a couple of sections with icy slushy sections.

Started this thread last year and planned on contacting and meeting Gunnerbuck, but as usual life got in the way.

Still have this trip on my list and hopefully will get to meet Gunnerbuck in person sometime this year.

Rode a short loop, from the Cook Creek FSR turn off to Horne Lake, with a couple of fun detours in the cleared from snow tracks on a couple of spurs.

Mt Curran and Mt Joan are a ride and hike planned a few months away, but the huge water bars up to the trail head are a bit bigger than what I like ridding 2-up. This spur was lots of fun today, deep water bars and staying only in the tire tracks out of the snow

The passes on the North Island TCAT sections still have heavy snow and will not be rideable for some time.. On the upper Adams the Shoen park boundry to Moakwa Valley will be snowed in, then White/Gold pass and then the top of the Tahsish drainage will be waiting another 1-1.5 months to clear. The Kinman Noomas loop may be 2 months to clear..

You can see in this picture that only the valley bottoms are free of snow

Thank you! I'll stick to Campbell River and south lower back roads, with maybe a ride up to San Joseph

If you make it up to the northern end I recommend avoiding the Holberg road to SanJo. Its been a rough ride since the forestry strike washboards the whole way to Holberg. The locals use a series of FSRs from Coal Hrb to Holberg. Think this route is part of the new Island 1000 it a nice scenic 20191227_140612.jpg ride last time I rode it.
