My girlfriend and I are going to spend a week next month on Vancover Island. We would prefer to stay in a nice little coastal town rather than in Victoria. We're thinking maybe a cabin on a beach somewhere. Nothing luxurious. Maybe central island located so we are within a couple of hours from either end of the island. Anyone have any suggestions? Also we would welcome any advice on what to do or see while on the island.

Tofino is ok. Gold River is better, not the traffic. Catch the Uchuck boat out to Friendly Cove on Nootka Sound. A day trip out and back on Fri or Sat. That's where Capt Cook put in. The road out there is fantastic thru Strathcoma Park. Reasonalbe accomadations and good food.

Or head out to Port Renfrew. Great ride but more traffic.

    Have fun

Check out Denman and Hornby Island. :thumb Each connected by a small ferry.
Catch the ferry to Denman Island just south of Comox on hwy 19A.

    Nanaimo, B.C.
It really depends on how quiet you want things.

Tofino is nice for scenery, & a great ride out there. Count on a ride of about 3 hours from Nanaimo with a couple stops. Beware, Tofino is now a Gorby town (Tourists - Tourists & more Tourists), of course you wouldn't be a tourist cause your riding. But IMO, the town is now, expensive, and well touristy. Ok for 1 - max 2 nights out there.

A better bang for the buck would be Telegraph Cove north of Campbell River, take the old highway up to Campbell River from Qualicum, its scenic, hwy #19. There is whale watcing out of Telegraph Cove, Orcas, and they have rooms, just check the internet. You maybe able to catch a boat ride to watch Grizzlies (from the boat of couse) depending on your exact timing.

Ride up to Port Hardy too, very nice for one night up there.

Another suggestion, Strathcona Park, for a ride at least, and there is The Strathcona Lodge, if your interested, a room may be difficult though.

Last one, check out Hornby or Denman Island, not sure if there is accomodation, there probably is, very nice, obviously on the ocean. There just south of Comox.

    the Great Lake State

...just seconding the recommendation for the old minesweeper, Uchuck, out of Gold River. The day I took it, it was a day trip, out and back. Their sailings vary by day for timing and destination. The ride through Strathcona is indeed wonderful. I did this one while staying in Campbell River for a few days. Good spot to base day trips out of.

Also great was the day of whale watching out of Telegraph Cove. I was stunned by the number of whales seen.

I enjoyed the Pacific Rim Provincial Park north of Uclulet and the big slugs! Though I was camping. Not sure of accommodations. Uclulet is kinda touristy, but was at the time still small enough to be ok.

It's all good riding. btw, my time window there was a week as well.

    Have a great time.

Check out Quadra Island I spent a day there last year when I was on the Island it is a very nice place.
There is a ferry that runs from Campbell River over to Quadra on a regular basis.
