Nice ride report. I traveled through the same part of VN a few years ago (not by moto) and really loved it there. Almost every minute of every day I was there was an adventure! I'm going to return some day and do it all over again on a motorcycle, hopefully spending a month or two. Keep the report coming! :clap

Day 4, Sunday 31-Mar, Bac Ha to Ha Giang

The whole reason that we spent Saturday night in Bac Ha was to check out the Sunday market. Bac Ha *WAS* off the beaten path (and the tourist radar) until recently, but it is on the verge of being run over by fleets of tour busses. We wanted to see it while it was still a legit market for the locals, before it converts to knick-knacks.

The tour busses start showing up around 9am from Sapa (an ethnic minority village that has been decimated by tourism already). We planned on being on the road right about the time the tour bus gringos arrived.

About an hour before dawn we heard commotion outside as the vendors were arriving and setting up. We were out the door before 7am and it was a lively scene.

We bought "donut holes" from this lady, they were awesome. We think they were filled with mung bean paste.

No i haven't seen many of them on the road either. There are very few Winners here in the Northern part of Vietnam but mainly due to riders prefering Yamaha's Exciters - a 150cc motorcycle.

I have no idea why young people prefer Yamaha over Honda but I read an article 2 years ago and Honda sales reps stated that they couldn't sell this bike to young Vietnamese riders, as they mostly prefer Yamaha.

This is what death by tourism looks like - it arrives in a Twinkie shaped hyundai bus:

It reminds me of when a Walmart opens in Small Town USA - the character of the place dies quickly.

Anyways we walked back to our hotel and found that the dog and chicken market had expanded and now surrounded our bike:

Wafer started bawling when she heard the caged up meat dogs yowling - she had reservations about coming to VN because she is such a dog lover, but I assured her that dog meat restaurants were few and far between and that she'd never encounter them on our trip. BF fail.

    Oops!
Perhaps not so much a BF fail as a naivete of other cultures. that's the purpose, the richness, of your trip, yes? almost no other culture thinks the same way as the US.

I love Asia in general but there are customs I cannot stomach. However, I will not even think about criticizing or changing. That is their business. Strange customs do not diminish my affection for Chinese, Japanese, Buemese, Indian, Polynesians or Philippinos. I forget anyone? A$$holes of any origin not welcome!

You have captured some awesome images and unfortunately one has to take the good with the bad when it comes to exploring and experiencing such different cultures...yet it's all enriching. Loving your report !

We hit the road from Bac Ha to Ha Giang around 930.

This was the longest (planned) day of riding for this trip, mostly because of a 10km long mountain pass of busted up road. That 10km section took us nearly an hour on our overloaded grand prix scooter.

There are piglets down that singletrack. Singletrack = someone's driveway.

6.7 percent growth in Vietnam. They call it the Ascending Dragon or Last Dragon because it may the last economy in the region to really expand like China or Korea has. I Loved it. The streets are lively the way China used to be before the CCP got all paranoid and stopped people from gathering publicly for concerts, festivals etc... without a crazy police presence.
