My buddy (on a GSA) and I (on a Tenere) will be hitting the trail on and off road from Richmond to Sperryville and down to Peaks of Otter (South Pedler Trail area) and back to Richmond October 15-17. Nothing too challenging, as I am a dirt novice. We are planning to hit some of the fire/forestry roads, etc found in this thread. It has been incredibly helpful.
I have been riding street for about 25 years and am still quite new to the adventure thing. Had a DR650 and liked it a lot, however, didn't really have the time to ride two different bikes. So, I sold the DR and my Blackbird and now am in love with my Tenere. Plan to hit some of the TAT next year on our cross country retirement ride. ADVrider is chocked full of so much info, it is hard to wade through it all!

Anyone wanting to join us in October, sound off!

My brother has basically given up on riding... and my riding buddy JUST now got his bike going. Soooo... I haven't ridden trails at all this year. But I'm looking forward to getting some in before the snow falls. :-)

Have been still working on mapping stuff... May be sharing a little tool in a few weeks. Nothing crazy.

My KLR is rotting in the driveway. The babies are preventing work from getting done... Don't know anyone around who I trust enough with a wrench to help get lots of car work out of the way so I can maybe begin to think about the resurrection. Miss my hobbies.....

Facebook is an evil fuck and I stay far, far away from there.

Links (tyler.schwend.us ones) on the first page aren't working. I have some family in Staunton and was hoping to do some day rides out of there so would love to see some of the gps info.

This is currently the best compilation of legally passable roads:
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3836145.pdf

I would be concerned at this point that my original data is outdated. When these kids get older perhaps I'll get some time to get back on the bike. :-)

Worth mentioning... while I am still active with OpenStreetMap, I did stall out on configuring a tile server / renderer for maps specific to adventure riding. CSS and pleasing design really aren't my thing... I had rendered a few tiles in a style that looked somewhat like MVUM, but couldn't decide on whether I wanted to render static maps for print out or a slippy-zoomy map that would work in OSMAND and other mobile apps utilizing OSM tiles. I was leaning towards the slippy maps... In any case, I don't have the time or the expertise apparently for that design part. I tore down my tile server and dev area a year or so ago to make room for baby pictures or something. The data is still in OSM for the taking... and somewhere I have written out some ideas for routing algorithms specific to dual sporting... mmmm.

Yeah I have a copy of that doc already. Was hoping for something more readily digestible :). Thanks for replying.

Well in that case... I dug through some old backups (and now I'm late for work!) and reuploaded some of those and updated my links. Don't think I did much mapping around Staunton, but I know a lot of rides happened up there.

BTW, so jealous of where you live both for paved *and* unpaved stuff. Whenever I visit my cousins I always head south on 11 to pick up the BRP via 56 as that's a fun rip up the mountain before heading north back to (NJ back in the day) MD.

Just wondering where the Link to GPX tracks are. I clicked both on the 1st post and neither would open. Excited to try some around VA. Thanks for any help.

No problem! Just got into Adv riding, but I've been working with GIS stuff for a while now. Found this thread and thought I should pass it on. There's a VDOT gravel road KML for Google Earth too, but I've misplaced the link.
