I did a trip on my then 6 month old 1200GS in April 05, through Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia and back home to Western Australia. I travelled on my own.
I camped at Mt Magnet the first night in my brand new tent, sleeping bag, cooked on my brand new stove etc. Too busy to take photos.
The next day was across to sandstone, Leinster, Leonora, Laverton then up the Great Central Road to Tjurkayirla.

I couldn't be bothered with the now used tent, I wanted to stay in the "Hilton" instead. When I unloaded and opened up my tank bag I found the chocolate bar I had bought at lunchtime and then forgotten about had melted all over everything. That kept me busy for an hour or so.

Next day I saw some wildlife. There are heaps of camels in Central Australia. They are relatively pure bred and some even get caught and exported back to the Middle East for breeding stock.

Wildlife #2. Birdstrike. He survived OK. A stunned parrot.

    As the sign says.

    Some people do it hard.

Hull River, NT. Lots of rivers in Australia look like this.

Lasseters Cave. Do a search for Lasseters Reef.

    Kata Tjuta. (The Olgas)

Entering South Australia. I was going to end up spending more time in SA than I bargained for.

Coober Pedy opal mining area. Opal fields stretch over about 100km. Not a good place to wander round at night without a torch.
By this stage my clutch was on it's way out. Leaking slave cylinder. First noticed at Marla.

Now my clutch was totally u/s. I had called the magic BMW Assist phone number and was now waiting for a flat bed truck to come up from Adelaide, 600km's away.

This didn't apply to me anymore.

Around midnight the truck arrived, we loaded up and headed for Adelaide. I was dropped off outside Adelaide Motors workshop at 7.30am, Saturday morning.

Accomodation and a hire car were organised. I had a few days to fill in, on Sunday it was off to the Motor Museum at Birdwood.

About the first thing I saw was a bloody 1200GS parked over the road. Bastard.

For some reason I have always liked these Fiat coupes.

And I've definitely always been keen on these!

    Hey Charger!

Yep, some people very definitely did it tough!

Genuine "Leyland Brothers" Landrover. Mike and Mal Leyland pioneered the adventure TV documentary genre in the 70's. For most people in Australia, it was their first look at what real Australia was about.

This was handbuilt. Another real adventurer.

Thursday 10am. Ready to roll again.

    more to come...

About to descend Horrocks Pass down to Port Augusta.

Busted arse rope shovel at Iron Knob. Yep, that's really the name of the place.

Iron Knob is an iron ore mine!

    The sign is pretty accurate.

    Great Australian Bight. SA.

As close to the edge as I was going to go.

    Eucla Telegraph Station. WA.

Madura Pass, WA, looking east. This is the same limestone cliff formation as the previous photos. The coastline is now about 20km south.

Another excellent factual and informative sign.

At the other end. What else did you think was going to be there?

    Esperance Harbour. WA.

Wave Rock, near Hyden, WA. Tourists being silly. I would never behave like that, I'm sure.

    And that's it folks!

Very cool report - I love your country!

Did you see any retail opal shops near Coober Pedy? My wife is seriously into opals and would really like to visit that area, IF there are places to buy raw opal cheap.

    Thanks.

After a business trip to Sydney I took a road to the back of Bourke returning through L.R. Great place, good beer and black opals. Include L.R. on your visit to Oz.
