My 2015 KTM 1290 SA-T
Oh no. Another final drive issue reported by the ultimate reliability tester Skizz? I'm just glad it did not happen at 100+. From what ya'll described it sounds like a less than perfect design to me, regarding the sealed bearing u joints. I remember when i first discovered BMW did not put a drain hole in my 2007 GSAs final drive and I had to drop the shaft and fill through the ABS port. I was heartbroken that it would now add an hour to servicing the bike, since I'm a oil changing fanatic.
I also still really like the 1150's Dave speaks of; even though they were reported to have occasional FD issues. I had two 1150R's, and am on my second GSA now, and having owned three airheads, two K1200RS's, the couple 1150's, a Phoenix cruiser, and three R1200's, never had a FD issue. Closest I came to it was needing San Jose BMW back in 1982 to weld up some drive splines on an R75/5 after 85K miles. I don't know if my religiously changing the FD fluid at around 6K, with the tranny fluid, has anything to do with it. At this moment I'm packing my bike and keeping my fingers crossed, and leaving for AZ mountains. I'm dreading camping in the heat halfway. I may need to leave real early and see if I can still do one of those iron butt rides like back in the good ol days. My body is saying yeah, good luck.
I didn't exactly pamper my 1150 GSA. I rode it 'hard' off road, banged it through rocks, logs and stumps. I was really amazed at how tough the final drive was on the 1150. I feel if my GSA had been a road runner only and not been abused, it would have most likely never had a final drive issue. My KTM 1290 is a good bike, but doesn't come anywhere close to having the ride of the 1150 GSA. While the KTM has a whole lot more power than the 1150, it doesn't have the low end torque to just blip the throttle from idle to pop over obstacles like the 1150 did. Both bikes have their strong points and weaknesses. If BMW hadn't shrunk the GSA with the waterboxer, I'd most likely still be riding a BMW. It was simple ergonomics that forced me onto the KTM. I do like the KTM, it was just a learning curve to learn the KTM's idiosyncrasies.
HiYa. Dripping Springs. New to me 16 GSA.
Welcome ! ! !
Threw a dart and landed in Henly for now. Calling it base camp while relocating back to the Hill Country from DFW. Looking for land in Blanco, Burnet or Llano counties. Hit me up if you know of some land for sale.
Awesome man. Hope to see you around.
How much land ? ? 10, 100, 1000+ acres,.......... ? ? ? I have a friend that lives on the Blanco area that may know of some land for sale.
I’d like to hear from your friend
10 is enough - any more would break me. PM me with his contact info, Big Dave.
Hello from the Killeen, ft hood area
Are there any good rides coming up? This was a few weeks ago in Colorado. I wish there were some trails like this here in Texas.
Big Ben (minus the snow and much cooler weather)
I'm going to go down to Big Ben this fall when it cools off (a lot of cooling off) ! ! ! It has been years since I've ridden down there. I think 1988 was the last time ! ! !
I went last year in my truck and it has some very nice scenery. I think Southwest Colorado spoiled me with shelf roads so that's what roads are constantly getting compared to in the back of my head.
Last time for me was like 2011.
SlowKLR...Roll The Bones Rally will be just north of you in Gatesville....good place to meet fellow riders and enjoy yourself
Folks I have now posted up about RTB X and it will be held at my place Ghost Rancho, I need volunteers to clear trails and make the final push to make this happen. PM me, text me, call me if you want to help!!!!
I'll be there if I can. It will definitely be a short ride up.
Go east young man.
