I went up the Western rail bed 2 weeks ago, as far as the second tunnel. Was pretty cold and I had overestimated temps, so shivering madly, and with a front tire losing air I turned around. Was hoping to see how much ice in the Bull Dog tunnel was left. Snow turned me around on Sat was just over 900 meters on Cayuse.

Thanks, I ended up on a hike today that had lots of snow patches at just over 1000m which leaves out both the Old Cascade and the Rail Grade. Time to head south for a time, I guess. :cry I just got a new (to me) DR650 and I'm dying to ride it!!:clap

They do have warm toilets! But you can check out the outbuilding in the back, locals built a rather nice "cedar composting" toilet behind the store. But mine at home has nicer views.....

Anyone thinking of running the Monashee these days? I am way late for that but the road is clear of all the sand, rocks, debris and black ice that were up there a couple weeks ago. Must have been the rain....!!!:clap

Only thing....19/20F at the top yesterday morning at 07.30AM. And 40F at 07.30PM last night. Came back from K-town/Vernon with a car full of supplies, now the Poontiac can stay parked for a long while. Not even worth switching over to the summer tires......:evil

Only one butter tart yesterday morning, the old lady just laughed as per my usual comment of looking for the one(s) with the most pecans.:rofl

Nice to know Highway 6 is clear. Next time through, I will stop for a tart.

I am about 2 weeks out from getting my Guzzi on the road. Had to pull the oil pan and have a repair done to the drain threads. I was going to do it, but in the end took it to a machine shop to re tap a slightly larger one.

Looking forward to getting on the Guzzi and getting out and about.

31A is also clear but some sand in the corners. Chilly by the frozen lakes and that is one place I'd watch for black ice if early morning. Snow banks are melting away and nowhere for the water to go but on the road where the sun hardly ever shines but late in the day.

    350kms yesterday, there and back.

Very nice, first ride without the Stanfields "Merino" and kept the screen down that's for sure. And now I know what the ghost car in the South Slocan looks like. :evilSlow down for oncoming white cars. Missing a piece of trim on the driver's door.:D

They were out in New Denver yesterday. License checks for everyone. 2 vehicles? I know what that may mean to some....That's the whole contingent in one place, the truck was parked at the station.:rofl

Bah...had a good laugh with them, that's a local bike I said, you'll see it again.:wink:Young guy shook his head up/down, he had seen me before.:D I must be doing something right, I keep meeting you guys at my usual speed I said.:rofl

120 indicated but the BMW is off by 10% on the high side. A couple days ago where the limit is 100.:D

Yeah, there hasn't been gas in Fauqier in 5 years. I always thought there might be gas in Burton, 1/2 way down the lake, but never stopped there. And yes there is gas in Cherryville, but a bit of a detour down that dead end road, and no ethanol free gas. You'll find that at Nakusp [Esso, north end of town]. I usually fill her up at the Shell in Lumby, 90 miles to Nakusp.

Are you ever wrong about both Fauquier and Cherryville.:evil

Ethanol free?:rofl Only been since last april that we got ethanol in our gas. Kamloops refinery wasn't set to add corn juice to the gas until early last year. And that's where most if not all our gas comes from. And then retailers had until April 01st 2014 to comply.

Yep I know about the BC regulations, they were dumping all the Ethanol in the larger markets to comply.:evil

Been filling with Premium in Fauquier for a few years now. 2-3? Heading that way in a few minutes. Otherwise I'll get gas in Edgeweed.:lol3

:clap Fuel in Fauquier for sure. Regular...Diesel "clear and dyed". No Premium but the owner wasn't there so I couldn't ask why or when they'd get some. Fuel truck just didn't show up on the thursday before Easter but did on monday.

On the rather short free ferry ride, well short as the lake is at its lowest.....well well what's on the ferry? The AFD fuel truck, that's the newish distributor around here.Sure I talked to the driver.:D No problem with their Kamloops gas I usually fill up with their Premium at Anderson's in Nakusp. New pumps....new look and best of all a roof over the pumps so we don't get wet or get rain in the tank. And unlike Esso they are never out of "marked Premium", that is if Esso ever had some.

On to Edgeweed....of course they have gas. Always had. Regular...marked Premium (:evil) and diesel.

On to the summit for a looksee at the snow banks. Watch out there is sand in the curves in the recently fixed part of the road between Deep Creek and Angel Falls.:eek1

A bit late in the day to go all the way to Cherryville and top up on regular at Frank's right on Hwy6.And Butter tarts....:D Or a little detour to the Emporium? That's where the AFD driver was heading, looks like the Emporium recently switched from whatever to AFD.

Back to Fauquier and top up on regular. According to BMW my bike should run on Premium. I don't care.....it has drank more than its share of regular over the years and plenty of it with corn juice added.Nothing has melted so far but yes I tought it deserved some injectors cleaning last winter.

And it did need it but according to the specialist who cleaned them and from whom I got 20 minutes of "shop talk".....not specific to the fuel type the waxy crud in the injectors. Premium or not they can all use a good cleaning at in my case 130,000 kms.:D

High milleage fuel injected bikes in the Kootenays? I think you'll have to go to K-town for a same day injector service.$34.00 w/tax per injector....good deal!:clap

Refinery in Kamloops? News to me, don't think so. Anyways, glad to hear. So has somebody else taken over the Mushroom Restaurant? Which company is supplying the fuel? I remember the guy had no ethanol 90 on his 87 pump for years, but retired 4-5 yrs ago.

The effects of ethanol "enriched" gasoline are well documented and confirmed by all. Even modern bikes have been affected, indeed my EFI '08 BMW has a recall on it to replace the sealing o-ring on the pump/sender unit which has been negatively affected by high ethanol use in the USA. Thankfully, we have ethanol free gasoline within easy reach in western Canada [Shell91, Esso91, PetroCan91, Chevron 94]. Very interested to hear the source of AFD's fuel, as they will be purchasing it from one of the big guys including highly used by Husky [total avoidance IMO].
Thankfully all of my bikes can make it from the Lumby Shell to Nakusp Esso, since Mushroom Express stopped selling gas. If they are pumping it again, very interested in who they are sourcing it from.

He didn't retire....just kept complaining about not being able to buy fuel at what was that? $14,000 or so/no credit from the distributor.

Yep he said....I am selling mid-grade at regular prices. For the bikes you know......Yeah Yeah Yeah. Maybe the visitors believed that......:lol3

Next door for fuel? Signs as you come out of the ferry, look closely!:evil

Where do you get your fuel? My first question for the AFD driver a couple days ago. Kamloops but you are right might be just a "point of entry" not a refinery. I guess the old German neighbor is behind the times.....!:lol3

Fual availability around here? may not be important to you but could be critical to anyone doing gravel/FSRs loops around there.

Time to go fill up all the fuel cans up at Anderson's. And keep working on her so she lets me drive that newish red Camaro. Now running on Premium since April 01st 2014 or thereabouts.

There used to be a refinery out by the airport in the 1970s, but its long been sold off and moved.

This year if every thing goes OK, I am planning a trip up into the Bad Shots area, silver cup ridge and up Healy creek, those are great riding areas-"Extremely technical up Healy creek on a bike.

Well...I have lots of fuel for anyone in need. That is if I am here and not on the road. Kootenays or otherwise, I do carry emergency fuel most times and my bike is now way better set to tap into the QDs and help someone in need.Wouldn't be my first time.

Local guy/local garage? $50.00 for a 20L of emergency fuel. He only keeps one. Funny I was talking to him yesterday and he could have used it twice on the same day last year. No luck to the second guy.

For that price and if the same happens again....I told him to call me.:lol3

Fuel is about 1/2c more at Anderson's these days. But they'll pump it for you and give you the "one on one" gossip as to where the authorities may be hanging around. That is if they know you....! Not that I really care but they sure were out yesterday, a little bit of a blitz going on these days in the Arrow/Slocan valleys. May be over by the time the bikes show up, sure not many around.

Enough....gotta go and line up some of my tools/parts and work my hotline a little. All the way down there to help a fellow BMW rider and hopefully teach him a few repair tricks. Weather looks good for Wednesday.Borscht Perogies and Kaslo sausage for supper then.:clap

Return through? 31B ??? I hear the grader was working there last week. Made the ride rather interesting to some GS riders I hear????:ear

Bah....should be packed by the time I get there. Be careful with bears over there, lots of them.....I tipped the K1200RS over one of them last year just south of Gerrard, I really should be riding something like a GS on them roads, he would have felt that hot pipe and veered the right way.:lol3

    Never heard of 31B, only 31 & 31A.
31 goes north from Kaslo past Trout Lake to Beaton.
31A goes from Kaslo to New Denver.

I've been meaning to explore the FSRs on the west side of Arrow Lake (north of Needles ferry), but doubts regarding fuel availability in those parts have been a limiting factor. Has anyone taken the other short ferry across to Arrow Lake Park? Good info in this thread about where to fill up. Thanks & keep it coming.

Couple of nice shots of sledders accessing some fine skiing in this thread too! I do a bit of BC ski touring in the winter myself, although don't own a sled or other deep snow capable access vehicle. There was a hill climb event last weekend at Silver Star, so I rode my old R80 up for a look see. Some pretty cool machinery up there. A week earlier after figuring out a way to transport my skis on the old R80, I rode up for a few turns on the last day of operations at the Star.

Sorry, a little off topic regarding West Kootenai, but I'm close enough, no?
