Unbelievable. By the looks of the shadow, I might have been there just minutes before you. Oh well, it all yours.

    Good to keep it moving.

Think I was there about 11:30. Uploaded the pic when I got back in service in New Martinsville. Couple more hours and I'll have the new tag up; I'm not there yet. And no, I'm not on my way to Matewan to let it sit there all winter!

    New tag:

    DSC07999~2.JPG

This tag is somewhere between Parkersburg and Staunton, VA. If you are coming from the east you will drive through a burnt house; several miles of new blacktop in both directions along this turnpike.

I was looking forward to a sammich from Lori's but she wasn't open when I was there. I had never been to Hundred before, and after I got home and looked at the map I still don't think I've been there. Looks like Hundred is another mile or so past Lori's on 250. At least I saw the high school!

I remember riding that route from Parkersburg over to I-79 one sunny afternoon. Great riding except for a few bad sections of pavement, but that was almost 10 years ago.

Nice to see the tag moving around.

PS - Was that Matewan joke pointed at me? LOL:lol3

Haha....I moved the tag from Weston (glass mural) to the Matewan Depot August, 2019. Think it was March, 2020 before it finally got moved.
As someone said, another 50 feet and it wouldn't have been in WVa any more!

My family (Wright's) are from Burnt House. My grandparents died before I was born. 1950s. They are buried just east of there. A few years back I buried my dad's ashes on his mother's grave. I hadn't seen him since 1981

An uncle’s (2nd.) wife was from the Burnt House area. Head down the road that runs south from there and you would have passed my great-aunts house. Lady with a Ph.D. in botany that resigned from teaching in a university up in MI, chose to marry a dirt farmer and live in a shack, complete with an old-timey crank phone on the wall (circa late 50’s), well, cream separator on the back porch, and a beautiful old pump organ I’d die to have today. Oh yeah, and a for real outhouse. Just watch out for the cow pies if you were headed back that way.

Hang a left at the next “major” intersection and you’d head towards the town where my dad’s folks are from, and a place where I would have inherited the family homestead once my aunt passed. Unfortunately, my wife’s declaration that, “I’m NOT moving to West Virginia” kind of ended that discussion several years earlier. She saw the major issues my mom had with no immediate medical facilities of any substance within 30 miles of there.

Correction: University of St. Louis in Missouri.

FWIW – my dad’s second teaching job was ~16 miles east of BH on 47 (Troy). His first was in a school at J.G Bradley’s coal town of Widen. Only stayed there a year (1932), and never really talked much about that experience, which was puzzling to my sister and I. He was also an avid photographer, but never took a single shot while at that place that we are aware of.

Oh, the things I’d like to ask him now that my life has slowed somewhat. Will never get that time back.

West of a spring running hot, if your eyes are open, you will miss it not.

Pretty easy if you have been in the area near the prior challenge.
