Trude Lake was sweet. Not a sole around. Quiet and mellow.

Found a bunch of nice, healthy, mature pine trees.

This one was quite the lone pine. Look at the size of my bike in comparison parked at the base of the tree.

For a field find, this thing is rockin !

I believe its a asian lily of some sort. I found it overgrown in a wooded field on a piece of land I bought. There was a old foundation nearby, along with old lilac bushes and a few peonie's. Must been planted decades and decades ago.

Wife replanted it at my trailhouse, and its sure rockin this week !

Yesterday was another 75 degree afternoon.

Most of the lupines have died off now and other stuf is coming into bloom. The big dragonflys are out in force now which signals the start of true summer conditions.

    P1030330.jpeg

Found some interesting ground cover thats very short and has unusual purple flowers. Cant ID this one yet.

    P1030332.jpeg

Henry lake was nice as allways. The shoreline Iris's are good resting perches for the big dragonflys when the breeze lets up.

    P1030336.jpeg

Found a small flowage down near Presque Isle that had a pair of loons swimmin and diving around. Sat and watched em for a while. If you have ever heard loons call, it pretty haunting !

In my younger days, a friend and I were riding and two mating dragonfly's hit him right in the mouth. He was wearing an open face helmet with glasses and had the chin strap over his mouth... He had dragonfly puree! :rofl He almost went down. Probably was lucky they hit the chinstrap. :D

Found a uncommon water plant on the same flowage.

These are Water Smartweed. They grow just like common lily pads and have interesting fuzzy pink cone flowers

Ran into one of the most well kept and tidy little luthern churches I have seen. Its half log siding, and has a operating bell tower. Might not be super old, but sure is cared after.

Its amazing how well they can bang away and still fly real well when they are paired up !

The ones I fear are the suicidal June Bugs ! Allmost like a bullet on impact and the splatter can cover half a face shield.

I will never forget the Love Bug season in central Florida. Could barely make a mile or two without pulling over to scrape the splooge off the face shield ! :nah

    That is a clean church!

For me the dreaded bug is a hornet smacking you somewhere unprotected or any bee that makes it up a sleeve or down your back. :amazon :muutt

Oh yeah, forgot about that ! :lol3

I know of its northern equal though.........asian lady beetles ! The infested Wisconsin about a decade ago. If you smash them or even beat them up with a shop vac, the acidic smell is super nasty.

There were times things like barns or ski lift shacks would have so many dead ones around thanksgiving, you could fill 5 gallon buckets with the dead ones.

So far, I have seen no asian lady beetles here for 2 full years........ fingers crossed.

Headed north was the small town of Marinesco Michigan. Used to be a log processing area.

They had a big sawmill powered by a 1500 HP steam engine all the way up to 1974. It had a 2 foot wide drive belt off a GIANT drive wheel !

Crazy thing is the new sawmill only operated a few years ? I need to research that more.

Now Marinesco is very quiet. Its at a main sled and ATV trail crossing, so it has a few taverns and a few residents, but not much else. It looks like they used to turn the big wheel on the engine with a electric motor......... sadly that no longer seems to happen.

Back westward into Wisconsin is the very small village of Pence. It has the Plummer Mine headframe . P1030350.jpeg

    P1030353.jpeg Its big.

There used to be a dozen of these all over the area back in the day. Now, This is the last standing one I believe. I find it especially sad its getting all overgrown around the base of it. Its a shame it isnt more preserved as a display sort of thing.

If you need a place to stay in Marinesco Michigan, Two Fat Guys Lodging has quite the historic joint.

Features include century old masonry block with up to a dozen partially working window air conditioners !

Its possibly the sturdiest building in town.

Had about 3 inches of rain two days ago. Things were kinda dry before that. This will change alot of things in a few days once its effects soak in.

Ha, that weird dog thing reminds me of something I saw a few years back, up there. I was heading to Agate Beach (township park?), near Toivola, and on the way toward Ontonagon. In the middle of nowhere, on the side of the road, was a small tree just filled with dozens of random, dangling shoes. Not sure of the significance but it sure seemed odd.

There is well over a dozen " shoe tree's " around.

    It's just a hokey thing Michigander's do.

Really cool thread! I have a cabin near Iron River, WI, about an hour from Ironwood. My wife loves waterfalls, so we've visited a few of these. She also loves taking pics of flowers, so I need to show her this thread.

And honestly, Hurley's reputation isn't much different today than it was back then. :)

Spotted a good place to take a break. Nice north breeze, temp around 65, and some tasty wild raspberry's.

A little further down was a great patch of Forget-Me-Nots still real healthy. Gettin pretty late in the season to see them doing this well.

In about 6 weeks, we start to see the first fall color changes.
