I'll be riding whatever bike I happen to find a good deal on the week before the trip from Oregon. Probably some old Japanese pile from the 70's. I'll work a 24 hour session to give it a good overhaul and be ready to rock. Nothing special needed. Might be a 750, might be a 250. Whatever it is it will definitely need some work. I'm psyched for Alaska!!! :D

Heading out July 23 from Kansas. I have 4 weeks. I will stick with my 03 BMW Dakar (32K) probably. It did fine for Banff and Jasper last year and Nova Scotia this year. Although I have an 06 KTM 640 Adv sitting in the wings if need be. If I decide on a smoother ride, it will be the 95 KLX 650C. Either way, its going to be THUMPER for me on this trip

I almost bought a GS1200 last week for summer rides to Alaska and Newfoundland but could not bring myself to sell the 950S. It is already set up for long trips and is paid for.

I have been debating adding the 11 gallon tank from Aqualine for those long stretches up north. Enroute to Alaska, there is plenty of gas. Up on the Dalton, gas is 250 miles between stations.

I saw everything on the road last summer. On the long Alcan and Cassier stretches, of course the bigger rides rule. But I was soo envious of the 650 KTMs and KLRs etc once we got on to the Haul Road and the Dempster.

*If* I decide to go NW instead of NE this summer, it will be either on the wife's Wee Strom or my 2006 KLR. Still sorting out my options, as I've only got from June 16 until July 6th off, and thinking maybe I want to save the next Newfoundland trip for a time when my wife can come along with me.

My ride will be a '00 R1100RT with 145000 km on it! Comfy and trusting! Michilen Pilot Roads, Aerostich Roadcrafter Suit, Garmin Zumo 550! Not sure yet whether to take along a tent.........how are the motels?
I will be leaving from Elora, Ontario around the beginning of August and be back for the Finger Lakes Rally at Watkins Glen, NY!
    Any tips?

It's what I own, what I know and what I trust otherwise I wouldn't bother to own it. I'm also a minimalist traveler so excessive luggage won't be an issue. :thumb

'05 KTM 450SX. Why? Motardin' it for the highway miles, going to make it into a light adventure bike and buy a 2moto.com track kit. Then again I'm doin' this in August when I EAS from the Corps and head up from Camp Pendleton. That and I'm only headin' to the Southeast area of Alaska, home. And no, you can't talk me out of doin' it on a racin' motocross bike, my mind has been made.

Did it two years ago on a KLR...this July I'm headin back up north on the big KaTooM:evil

KLR was great but the KTM fits my riding style. I saw 883's, Road Kings and plenty of full dress GW's including this fella and a buddy outfitted just the same on the Top of the World Highway and they seemed to be doin just fine:clap

There will be two 950's and one 1200GSA in our group this summer for what it's worth.
