Tapered fit should really just come loose with a small tap.. IMHO micro corrosion could have been the culprit in keeping things tight....

Agreed! Because it was ferocious in not wanting to come off!!

I had a small-ish (2-lb) slide hammer at first - no joy, not even a hint of movement. Like, the kind of non-movement that makes you slap your forehead and realize "oops, I forgot to take the nut off"! :lol3 So, I 'borrowed' a bigger version (~5-lb) from an auto parts store - still no joy! Took 2 weeks of daily PB Blaster soaking to finally get it off there.

And, yep, when it finally came free, it came free all at once! One hit and bang, the flywheel and slide hammer and puller all off in a heap on my foot! :lol3

Anti-seize would not be a good idea. The woodruf key is only there for orientation, the pressed taper is what keeps the flywheel from spinning on the shaft.

Agree with Danny. A locking taper should go on dry. If it makes you stay awake at night then a very light machine oil to prevent corrosion is all you should use.

Not quite as woodruff keys also keep things from spinning freely on shafts of all types like steering systems on boats, impellers on pumps etc. The press fit of a tapered shaft provides lateral stability as well as clamping force to keep things in place. YMMV

I didn’t mean to imply drowning the fooker either btw...:D

Well, it's not my machine, so I'll not be the one that ever has to get it off years from now, so...

Went for a ride today, it's been over a month. Still sore, but it felt good to be on two wheels again. The AT is running well.

Crashed almost 5 weeks ago. A deer took the Vstrom out from under me riding on a forest service road. Landed on my right shoulder, about 35mph.

Went for a ride. Okay, it was only to work, but it's better than not riding at all.

Rode the Sherpa on a quickie little ride to and thru the Tosohatchee WMA. Rode out to the St. John's River. Saw one or two airboats roar by. Perfect weather around here these last few days! Sunny, highs in low- to mid-70s!!
