Good mileage haul yesterday. One closed road ruined some good times on perfect two track, but it lead to some great off the path pavement. No riding today, rained out and likely tomorrow, too. So we visited some dudes on a mountain.

Here y’go. Your guess is as good as mine!

The dark stuff was just brittle dried fuel deposits/varnish and came right off. But I have no idea what chewed up that needle! The edges of the ‘chewed’ areas are all smooth and rounded, not sharp, like pliers or vise grips would do. There are no ‘raised’ areas, they’re all pits or erosions.

Everything else was just garden-variety dirty. No other physical damage at all! All stock jets. But, mixture screw anti-tampering plug had already been removed, and mixture screw was 4.5 turns open! But the o-ring, washer and spring on mixture screw was perfect! Needle had a 0.041” washer added to lift it up.

I can’t believe it ran as well as it did!

Now it’s getting cleaned in my Harbor Freight cheapie ultrasonic cleaner w/diluted Simple Green, then will get reassembled with the 3x3 mod kit.

    Weird, for sure!

When you look closely at that jet, it's pretty clear what you got going on there....

New silicone radiator hoses and thermostat delete on the Beta 500. Next up, coil, plug wire & cap, regulator, and tires. Then she will be up for sale.

KLX400 carb overhaul and 3x3 mod done. Huge difference! Smooth and very strong off idle! No mid-range surge/flat spot. Will be very nice off-road. Main jet went up from 142.5 to 155, so I’ll be curious to see what that does to MPG.

Plus, installed the rear rack, so that’ll be nice.

That's what looked off to me; original main jet needle was not brass? Some pot metal that reacted badly to today's fuel components maybe?

Curious of how much louder the intake noise is now w/ the airbox mod? Similar effort made on my older XR before I acquired it. Interesting the balance between noise limits and Hp produced.

I didn’t even notice it! But then, I generally wear earplugs under my helmet too.

Its really not that much larger of an opening, and it’s still buried under the seat and all…

And this mod isn’t about max HP gain so much as it is about better drivability and correcting factory-lean jetting, especially since the needle/main jet combo I chose are for stock exhaust.

The kit came with a bunch of extra jets and another needle, and a little chart for your mods & elevation.

Just an observation about the efforts the engineers go thru to design a bike that meets imposed noise or other requirements and then we go at it with sharp implements to correct it's misgivings....

A buddy's big XR was noticeably louder "intake wise" after the recommended "uncorking" air box mods.

JD jet kits are indeed nice, avoiding much trial and error. Upgraded my KTM's FCR with one and pleased as well. Wish they offered one for the old XR.

About that 3x3 mod . . . I listened to this when I did mine on my DRZ400 years ago:

And it turned out like this:
