If you link an image it will carry forward into a reply box. An attachment does not.

Will you expand upon this for all the Luddites out here?

    For example, this post:

What is a linked image vs a linked attachment ??

If I want to quote and have the pic displayed I delete the ATTACH xxxxxx ATTACH line, copy image & paste; then it shows:

    So, what's the difference? :scratch

    Thanks.

The top image was uploaded to this site as an attachment. The bottom one is hosted somewhere and linked here.

No; they are both the same image from the same post.

The top is as it appears when hitting 'Reply'.

The bottom is after I copy image and paste it in the quoted reply as described, above.

It has never made sense to me which is why I ask.

Hmmmm, you are correct. That’s the first time I’ve seen an attachment come through in a quote that I’m aware of.

Speculation here: A linked image is stored elsewhere. When you view it your browser is accessing the server hosting the image. An attachment is a file stored on the advrider.com server and linked to the message.
Why the attachment displays in the original but not in the quote is a question for Xenforo. Does not make sense to me, either.

I think that if you copy image and paste, you actually are creating another attachment, which means the server is storing two copies of the same image.

If I think I need to include an attached image in a quote, I am now using "Copy image address" to get a link to the original attachment (which is on the advrider server), deleting the ATTACH xxxxxx ATTACH line, and using the image insertion tool upload_2021-10-5_20-31-15.png , to link to the URL of the original image.
