    Howdy All,

My computer fhoo is NOT the best, I am thinking of upgrading my GPS and am interested in the Montana. I am looking to get it with the 100K topo maps, the latest city map set and the auto kit for use in my four wheeled vehicles. Thanks for any leads you can give. :deal

GPSCity is where I spend all my gps bucks.

They have the 650 with US Topos for $635.

You're going to love that gps. It's not perfect yet, but it's pretty darn close, and Garmin's pumping out features and fixes on a regular basis.

    I just got a Montana 650 for 499
    I already had a Nuvi 550
The Nuvi is MUCH easier to use and has a far better base map.

Is there a cheap, easy to install "complete" map for the Montana???

I think you're comparing the fairly useless basemap on the Montana with the City Navigator maps on the Nuvi. That's not a fair comparison. If you don't want to buy maps, you might want to download some free Open Street Maps.

I've been trying for about 2 hours to download Open Street maps... I give up

Should I buy City Navigator or subscribe to Birdseye, or both.
I want a good base map on the GPS

City Navigator is quite a good deal in my opinion.

Have you tried downloading from here?

    ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/download.openstreetmap.de/aio/

Come to think of it, I can't see US maps there... too bad.

Don't give up - they can be big files. The first one I generated was 500mb. Openstreetmaps sends you an email when the map is ready, click the link to download. It will take some time, just leave it overnight if you have to.

I agree, I downloaded many maps from there and just started the download then went off and did other things for a few hours and let the download continue...

Oh, I was expecting the download to start right away.
I loaded City Nav last night. It went smoothly.
I'll play with Open Street Maps some more.

OSM does have pretty decent road detail, but the POI database is a joke compared to something like City navigator.

Be careful who you are buying from. The Montana is an expensive piece and Garmin may not honor your warranty if purchased from a source other than an authorized dealer.

Also in the past some of the low-ball guys were removing mounts etc from and charging extra for them. And selling gray market units as well. Rare but it has happened.

Montana's do not come with mount(s) in the Box like the zumo 550/660/665.
