I too was talking to a middle aged man today who had no idea what the black dog is.
Perhaps an added line to stickers and banners highlighting depression might help.
Or simply call it ride against depression and have a black dog as the symbol.

    They do :nod
The stickers for the Black Dog Ride all say
Black Dog Ride (Raising awareness of depression and suicide prevention)
The logo is a black dog riding a bike

Been and gone this year. Left Victoria on the 10th of August and met the other states in Darwin.

    Hey @JohnG.
Shitty Shitty business. A really steep slippery slope that only a few ever get off before the bottom. And it is a long way down. I hope that for you and your Lady that the daughter survives it.
    Keep checking in.

Yes, reminds me of my late father thinking I was a doctor once LOL... And now my Mum at her aged care centre with her 'inmates', its all very organized with them each having the same dining room seating position.
Heaven help you if you sit in the wrong chair LOL
I did notice each person was still fairly sharp in one aspect of their personality.

Got dressed up and went for a ride. Rolling thru town, tooting horns and maybe some throttle blips actually made me smile and enjoy it all.

quite a few people admired the bike, surprised me actually. One fella I have known for years who has lots of bikes and fast ones, really likes it as well, says it looks fast just standing still

probably a lot of people reading this thread suffering with mental health problems silently not posting just reading . I think every body has bad patches in their life's at some point or other it can be bough on by love affairs or marriage break up health problems aging losing a job money problems missing a loved one who has died gambling drink or drug addiction or funny as it may sound porn addiction and compulsive masturbation can cause a lot of anguish . if someone is feeling low trying to suppress it with food or substances will not help eat healthy and try and get some exercise a nice walk and empty your head of all thoughts just think about your breathing and your walking and enjoy the surrounding's . if you meet any others try to greet them friendly even a smile and a nod as a lot of people listen to music now when they walk it might brighten up their day and be the only contact they have with an other human being all day . even if you are unable to take exercice because of pain or injury getting some fresh air and spending a little time some where peaceful helps for me long rides on my bike and chatting with strangers when I am on my travels do me a lot of good . the internet is a great educational tool on youtube there is a lot of lectures on mental health issues by some really great people . I would urge anyone who finds them self's or there loved ones feeling down or hopeless or feeling paranoid or just finding it hard to cope with life to spend the time trying to figure out whats wrong and how to fix it or manage to live with what is holding them back and keeping them down . for people who experience paranoid thoughts whether herb induced or not this book will help a lot . Overcoming Paranoid and Suspicious Thoughts 2nd edition Daniel freeman Jason freeman Philippa Garety . this book is aimed at people with paranoid personality disorder but they is no need to go putting labels on yourself if that makes you feel uncomfortable .

if you suffer from paranoid thoughts and find it hard at work or in social situations at times this book will help you . a big cause of suicide is borderline personality disorder a lot of people don't know they suffer from this their life can be hell and the lifes of their loved ones they can tend to suffer from addiction or in some cases self harm . there is therapy available but sometimes people are not available to get the therapy because of work commitments or they just want to fly under the radar kind of thing and don't want the stigma attatched seeing a shrink who in my experience just want to load you up with pills anyway and not really treat your condtion . in some cases the right pill in the right dose can help people in a bad situation but try to advoid long term use . there is plenty of help there for a troubled mind these days trough youtube and great books on a wide range of self help . please if you feel you or a loved one needs help look for it work on yourself why suffer when a little effort on the matter can free you of the burden and the load you may have carried for a long time

You have some great stuff there, Insomnia. It is an unfortunate part of depression (and I guess other mental illness) that you feel no one understands or can help. I spent quite a time lurking on the Beyondblue forums, reading about sufferers who cancelled doctors appointments at the last minute for minor excuses then I nearly did the same thing! Bloody Black doggie doesnt want to be cured.

For some there is great help in "self help" books like you describe. From my own experience (which will be different from others) I would recommend finding your safe place to discuss your issues, whether that be family, friends, this forum, doctor, Beyondblue, Lifeline....etc. Everything you do, from books to doctors will help you understand your mind and its issues and ultimately understand your triggers and coping mechanisms.

I am not familiar with borderline personality disorder, Insomnia. Could you give a quick overview?

I've been lurking in the thread. The black dog isn't a big problem for me now but I went through a period last year where I cried every day and just wanted to get hit by a bus while on the bike. It was a combination of many things that led me to that depth of sadness and I was so glad when it lifted. I didn't talk to anyone about how down I was and in retrospect I should have. I did a great job of keeping up appearances like I was happy when I was not.

I'm impressed to see this discussion taking place here and can see how it would do heaps of good to know that you are not alone feeling as you do. I admire those who live with the black dog always and keep going on.

Oh god, meth is nasty stuff. I'm sorry.

    Cootzie, and all others
This is a reallly special thread, we are lucky.
Sometimes some body comes in and craps on, but they dont usually last long before getting shut down.
I think a fair few people actually lurk here and it that is helping then that is good.
I think it takes a bit of courage to post in this thread, it did me at first, but it feels a safe spot with a fair bit of anomity
I might have spoken with a some posters here at the OCR, but I dont know, it doesnt matter
