890 makes perfect sense for a Duke R model. People have been asking for a duke r with upgraded suspension since the original 790 duke came out. I could see some kind of sport touring 890 too. Maybe even a street biased adventure with 19/17 but I don’t see the 890 in the adventure r. Ktm spent too much time and too much hype to make a big change like that so soon.

Seems Ktm’s model life is max 3 years then they want you to buy the new one. Besides, it’s a lower entry point model, so they prolly figure the people who put down a deposit a year ago will do the same and move up to a 890 without much fuss. It’s called “planned obsolescence”. Ktm’s a big fan of this strategy. With their non serviceable electronics and parts you can only buy as full assemblies instead of components.

if it's just a big bore kit of the 790 then wouldn't it be the same weight just with more power?

I see the 790 being put in the 2020 Adventure models and the 890 initially being placed in the Duke "R" and potentially the SuperMoto. Next year, or the year after, the 890 Adventure will come to bear.
Why? Because KTM has to get their money out of the ADV crowd...first, by moving to the parallel twins then by upgrading in a few years to the 890. JMHO.

    TL;DR

All I've heard is 890 Duke R. No Adv announced or rumored right now. The Duke coming out first would follow the 790 pattern.

The only way I see KTM killing the 790 for an 890 in the ADV platform after working so long to make a lighter ADV machine is if they also build a smaller parallel twin than the 790 to slot into the line up.

    A 890 Husky Adventure perhaps....

I would also rather have a 700 twin in a SE trim....375lbs....lets goo....

As to a 100cc bump on the current bike....I sold my 1190 to buy a 1290....the 1190 motor is much better in my opinion....more responsive.....

Why kill it, they can offer both, just add another few thousand $ extra for the additional 100cc

IMO the 790 engined adventure bike is just fine. Increasing it to 890 would not make me part with my 790 even if weight was equal. The 790 makes enough power for me. I traded down from a 1290 so was willing to sacrifice less power to get less weight.

I’d like to see KTM go the opposite way with an even smaller lighter twin than the 790. No interest in 890 as I’ve had 950’s, 990, 1190, 1290. That said, I’ll buy any size modern SE twin they build, weight be damned. . If they do build an 890SM, that might be hard to resist.

From what I understand the 790 engine lacks a bit of down low torque so the bored out 890 could be an easy fix.

I would be surprised to see it debut as a Husky though. We'll probably know more in around a month at EICMA regardless

my opinion is maybe they need the 890 powerplant fitted to pass the emission regulations for the euro 5 norm.
if so they could introduce a new model (for instance an Smt 890) for 2020 to see how the reaction of the public is and keep the rest of the range 790 untill they have to upgrade 01-01-2021

Guys, I just read an article where KTM are launching a new series of bikes with a 490cc parallel twin engine, included in the range will be an Enduro and an Adventure bike. Now that will be interesting.

The 790 has plenty of usable power everywhere in the RPM range, even off idle. I wouldn't trade more weight or poorer fuel economy for 100 more ccs.

imo the engine doesn't wake up untill 4k rpm
it could use more power down below or different gearing.
that said I dont ride off-road
and my normal bike is a 1290saS

I don't see a huge weight gain to either bore or stroke out the 790 for an additional 100cc. If it gives you more power at the same weight (and keeps reliability the same), it sounds like a win-win.
I'd love to see it on the new Rally coming out in the spring (I have a deposit on one).

    funny thing,
    rode a demo 790 adv R
and it was a lot more awake below 4000rpm
I could ride it in 3rd gear or 4th below 3500rpm without a problem
