Fountain City-Cochrane-Buffalo City was my fall hang-out for many years. Thanks for the pix! :thumb

Prairie Moon started up with a 71 year old farmer back in 1955 as a way to beat boredom. He kept his stuff inside the old Prairire Moon Dance Pavilion. He added other stuff like a goat powered washing machine. He kept expanding outside until he got tired of it and sold the place which became a dog kennel. Stuff then went to hell until the Kohler Foundation stepped in (like they did at the concrete park) and restored things. The dance hall is an interpretive center that now has models of Cochrane buildings that some guy made.

The big Viking is an old advertisement for kitchen carpets by Viking. It got moved here and now has its feet sunk in cement for stability.

Might as well cover the Rock In the House in Fountain City since we are in the neighborhood. This 55 ton rock can tumbling down into a house in the 1990s. In 1901 a rock came down the same bluff and killed a woman in the house next door. Sometimes you see chain link and cables erected above some houses to stop the small ones . . . but I don't think that would stop a rolling 55 ton slab. The woman of the house was home when this hit around noon back in 1995. She and her husband sold the house to someone that opened it as a tourist attraction. The place is like they left it.

Kenosha Dinosaur Museum, this dinosaur was built on a History Channel show called "Milwaukee Blacksmiths", it only ran for one season, it was a little corny, but I liked it because it was close to home.

I've often thought there must be a manufacturer of these large fiberglass figures somewhere in western or northwestern Wisconsin. It seems like they are everywhere around there.

I just added 55 waypoints (some are repeats) to the original GPX for this thread. They cover notable gas stations from the past. A new version of the GPX is in post 3. Jim "Fill 'er Up" Draeger also has a book out about historic bars and breweries. Might have to add those waypoints sometime as well. One of our own riders, Carl Corey, has a book out about notable Wisconsin Taverns. There are also a couple of books out about notable Wisconsin supper clubs. Maybe it would be better to combine the tavern, breweries, and supper clubs into a single themed file. I have a list of brewpubs that could be rolled into that as well.

Let's have a few gas station pics to "prime the pump" from some I took years ago.

This one isn't in the file or the book. It is a spot where Al Capone would make a regular "pit stop" on his way north. It is in Thorp.

1931 Kewaunee Gas Station Service bays were becoming an important source of revenue. The paper reported that this station added to improve the appearance of the downtown area.

    Franks Diner in Kenosha

Tony Franks bought this in 1926 for $7,500. He had it shipped from Jersey by rail and then towed into place by horses. He expanded a couple of times over the years. Franks is the oldest continuously operating diner in the US. Good food. Franks hosted a lot of notable people over the years including Larry Welk, Bela Lugosi, The Three Stooges, Duke Ellington, Cannonshot and his pals, and Liberace. :evil
