Wunderlich Short Beak Conversion for F800GS

    A few inmates have asked for a few more photos of my F800GS after my post yesterday.

    At the risk of receiving hate mail from BMW engineers, I must admit I’ve never been a big fan of the GS beak. I discovered the Wunderlich short beak a while ago and always wondered what it would look like on the F800GS. Maybe I was inspired by ChiTown breaking the mold with his Storm Trooper Bike build, but I decided to order the short beak and give it try. The short beak is starting to grow on me and I definitely like the look better than the OEM beak. I know the short-beak look is not for everyone.

    The fit and finish of the short beak is pretty good. The paint match is decent, but not exact—I’ve heard it’s difficult to match BMW metallic paint. YMMV with the other short beak colours available. If you look closely at the photos below you’ll see a few dried paint drops. The ABS plastic and aluminum bracket are well-made. Next time I have the beak off I’ll paint the aluminum bracket black.

    If the bike came like that, it would probably look fine. But as it is, it really looks like something is missing, no?

    +1 on the question, what benefit were you looking for? I could see one maybe being visibility, being able to see your tire easily in really gnarly stuff?

    Cosmetic. Quite simply, to some, it is less ugly than the stock beak...

    Benefit? A light wallet?

    I will be the first to admit the beak conversion is mostly about aesthetics. As I said before, I never liked the design of the OEM beak.

    Thanks Moto. I think that may be a nice way to finish off the front end when going to a high fender as well.

    My suggestion exactly. I've commented before that the high-fender conversions that folks have done look unfinished. This is a pricey item for what it is but it's worth every penny if you like it.

    Although I don't like it, I wonder if using it with a high fender would change that opinion. :dunno

    I agree with markymcd that the high-fender bikes thus far (except ChiTown's and gpracer's) look unfinished.

    I ran my f8 without the beak for a while when I put the light bar on... I find the bike ugly with or without the beak.... It's just two different types of ugly, but no preference for me....

    I'm not particularly competent in the dirt, but I've never really been fussed about being able to see my front tyre, so the stock beak obscuring the front tyre doesn't bother me. I personally also don't like the aesthetics of this on a "normal" bike, such as the OP's (although to each his own).

    Where I think it would look absolutely brilliant, compared to the alternatives, would be when you have done a high fender conversion (like ChiTown's bike). In setups like that, no beak looks a bit weird and creates a gap between the rest of the tank fairing and the new fender. Conversely, leaving the OE beak in place looks weird and redundant and I would imagine in some instances could even cause clearance problems with the new fender. I think fitting this would nicely fill the gap, but not look too silly with a high fender under it and would keep the bike looking relatively factory.

    You must note that conversions like Chi Towns work much better because of the Touratech tank. It's a little harder to make it look right when you've got the stock panels, which is why this might work. If it was only $50 it would make much more sense.

    Exactly. I would love to see someone come up with something like the TT tank that isn't a tank, just a cover, which would allow us to do a decent looking high-fender conversion.

    My uncle used to have a chicken processing plant. They used to cut the beaks off of the chickens so that they wouldn't injure on another in the pens. That's what I see when I look at this conversion. And, I too ask; why do this?

    My vote is NO. Not a good look!

    What I'm proposing is that even without the TT tank, I think using this beak would make a high-fender conversion look much better than either leaving the OE beak in place, or removing it altogether.

    After ChiTown’s fender fiasco prior to his rebuild, I strongly considered doing a high-fender conversion, and am still thinking about it. While installing the short beak I wondered whether a high fender would be compatible. Even the short beak may appear redundant with a high fender install. If I get my hands on an appropriate fender (e.g. KTM 690 Enduro) in the near future, I will post pics of the mock-up. Just no more “genetic defect” comments OK? :ddog
