I think what the original poster was saying is that many laced/tube type rims do not have a “shoulder” to prevent the bead from unseating...I’d definitely wanna have a look at the bare rim before trusting whether it’s a good idea or not.

I know he's saying that. My point was the chances of a tube tire coming off that kind of rim are much higher because they're more prone to sudden deflation in the event of a flat. That's why most dirt bike riders use rim locks.

Would it make any sense to use the 3M tape with a tube to slow down deflation?

Not to me. If you want to keep the tube and prevent the tire from coming off the rim, use a rim lock. Also keep in mind that front flats are pretty rare, especially if you avoid airing down so you don't get a pinch flat.

Why not rotate them 90 degrees to the back of the bike, so that the straps when tensioned are pulling into the highest arc of the clip?

At the moment I am using these round eye loops. They're stainless, nice and smooth, and the inside diameter is just shy of an inch. Very solid as well.

I use Rok Straps and standard passenger pegs. No sense in getting all complicated.

I can totally do that and did play around with mounting them like that, I was just trying to eliminate has much contact and rubbing with the plastics.

I have Rok Straps and love 'em, but these tie-down points are to tie down luggage such as Mosko Moto's Reckless 80 soft luggage using their built-in straps. I've also removed my passenger pegs, hence the reason to install something else.

I bought a set of these but haven't mounted them yet.

    Kind of, but not really.

We use rim locks because if you DON'T, when you're running low pressure, the tire will spin on the rim and it will tear your valve stem out and you'll have an irreparable flat.

Also, to address the "sudden deflation" issue which is separate from rim locks:

We run some kind of tape over the spoke holes, under the rubber cushioning rim strip.

    Duct tape, most commonly.

This is so you don't have a sudden depressurization through the spoke holes on a pinch flat or a puncture.

You'll get the gradual feeling of lower and lower pressure in the tire, and avoid a loss of control, as air seeps out of the bead over time.
