I ended up picking up this little craig's list beauty today:

    She's a 1993 KLX650C (E-start version)

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but in the end I couldn't resist the temptation of a big bike.

Usually on those bikes if the forks are upside-down, so is the rest of the bike.

Yessir they did. That is part of the difference between the KLR and KLX.

The bike rides really nicely on the road. Can't wait to give her a shot off road.

Did you paint your plastics or just pull off the decals?

Some of the body panels on mine were painted and could use a touchup. I'll be sanding an painting this week :)

If you need parts, let me know.

I had a 95 which I ran into the ground... Ive got a nice comfy seat, some body panels (red), a beat up FMF pipe, stock tank...

    Great bike! Loved mine.

No, sorry man, but using craiglook.com I found a crap load of them for sale in Ohio for some reason. Might be sold by now, but a guy in Marysville had a '96 e-start with 2900 miles for $1450.

Congrats Deputy! :clapYou finally nailed your suspect. I saw that on craigs too. I like the blackness. I have always liked the looks of the KLX but hated the looks of the KLR. The KLX looks and is racier. I don't know how much is interchangeable between the two? I would like to check it out someday..... Gilbert in Grandville

Thanks for the advice up to this point Gilbert. It will take me a couple weeks to get things they way I want them, but we will have to hook up and ride some of those back roads between Grandville and Zeeland.

Funny, I saw this bike last year on Craigslist and the PO told me he was the one that posted it, but it never sold so he used it for another year of commuting.

Hey Deputy, you better get some fork tube guards like fast willies got on his KLX before those tubes get nicked up. $$$$ I believe there is a bracket for the speedo cable too. You don't want that hanging out in the wind.$$$:eek1 Even though I bought another road bike today, I'm still shopping for a dueley. The KLX in Oshkosh is tempting.
