Anyone from the York area? I am planning a ride following the life of my Grandfather. Grandpa lived in York while a small boy and played the background "oompa" music for the local radio station KBGZ when he was elemantary age. This was in the 1920s.

I am looking for any info on the radio station but primarily need to know if the building still stands. I would like to tour it and see about getting some pictures or momentos. Any local historians or anyone who would remember anything about the radio station would be fantastic.

= would also be happy to meet other board members while I am in the area.

I lived in York in the late 50's till 1966. Nice little town. Typical rural town square and a lot of churches. I remember listening to the AM station on a crystal set built at cub scouts. :lol3 If I remember correctly the call letters were KAWL. Don't know anything about KBGZ. Probably way before my time.

My family and I almost spent the night in the cab of my pickup in York last Dec 26th. Big winter storm on Christmas and the next morning.
We were headed west on I-80 until the road was closed at Lincoln. We went north to Hwy 34 and continued west on that until it too was closed. Drove back down to York where I-80 was still closed. Hotels full, traffic parked all over the shoulders. We lucked out and, after waiting about a half hour, the highway re-opened. That's my York story, not that you asked. :D
Very cool story about your grandfather.

I've been through York, but never stopped. Very cool that you are doing a ride to follow the life of your Grandpa.

I took this at about 1:00am from the eastbound exit on I-80 last August.

Beware of inmates from the area. They may insist upon showing you some good local roads, taking you to BBQ or to a local brewpub. Use extreme caution......

Like most of us, I too blast through Neb. on my way to the wild west. In my road atlas I have the York exit circled and good food written down. There must have been a good restaurant at that exit for me make that note.:dg

Hush, you. I never use the 'v' word here.

Despite my 'v' status, I sure didn't go hungry. :nah :dg

Thanks everyone, I have been getting some help from the local librarian. The radio station was first on the air in 1927 and was pretty short lived. It was owned by a vetrinarian that used it primarily as advertisement for his own "livestock serum" that would cure everything that ailed your bovine.

I have found some info on the building. It is now a real estate agency. I spoke to the realtor and he offered me a tour anytime. I am excited to walk through the same doors grandpa did 70 years ago.

York is just the first stop in this ride.
I will post up more details as I get them. Really excited for this ride. My grandfather next worked for a radio station in Abilene ks. Before he started touring in honky tonks when he was in high school. Then it was off to med school in k.c. then practice in oklahoma all before he landed a practice in my home town of Drexel where he worked until he was 85. He still plays in 2 bands twice a week.
