Zoncolan is one of toughest climbs in Giro d'Italia cycle race. This year winner Danilo Di Luca said:

“The Zoncolan is a terrible climb and never seems to end,” Di Luca said. “Simoni was very strong and so when he accelerated I preferred to ride at my own pace and defend my lead. I think I did the right thing and did pretty well. Fortunately I knew the climb after seeing it a few months ago and paced myself. I knew the gradient eased in the tunnels near the finish and I was pleased to make it because I knew my pink jersey was safe.”

My father and I are fans of bicycle racing so it was perfect destination for one day trip. Dr.chala (also member here) and his wife joined us. :wave Lot of pictures in this report is taken by them.

First stop is Redipuglia, Italian military cemetery from WW I. Around 100.000 people are buried there.

After suffering in very heavy local traffic, we finally reached village of Ovaro, where climb begins.

Great RR and a weekend route that's on a must to do list  .
Didn't know that You're fans of Cycling, your dad and Yourself. I'm also great fan of cycling, and was racing MTB-s for a couple of years, but don't mind watching the Giro or the Tour and admiring the sacrifice those guys take for 3 weeks non stop :clap :clap :clap .

Thanks for the great snaps. I watched that stage on internet feed here in USA and it was brutal. Simoni and the Sanier Duval boys rode great that day. Your photos really made the stage come back to life.

I think they repaved the road before the Giro, so you had some good pave.

How long before the stage did you drive up?

Nothing matches Italian cycling fans for their love of the sport!!!

We were there last week (07.06, holiday in Croatia), just to see how the road looks. Only thing left from big crowds watching the actual stage was large pile of garbage. :huh
