Have a Zumo 550 that came with the Vstrom 650 my friend gifted me when he passed away. My friend Scott bought the bike from the original owner who said the Zumo had stopped powering up - Scott tried futzing around with it with no luck. Garmin no longer supports the Zumo 550 - is there anyplace else that will or should I just toss it in the Recycle bin? Seems a shame as it looks like it hasn't been abused and is in good physical condition from the outside.

I only recently moved from a 550 to a 590. I kept the maps up to date and was quite happy with it. It is still my back up gps.

If the cost is under $100 then I'd be very tempted to fix it.

Even if you decide not to use it,dont trash it,throw it in the flea market here.
Parts such as case, screen, rubber button covers, mounts, etc are in demand.

They are still very good units, current software still supported on these units.

Yes,I would send it off, think their basic diagnostics cost is not high.

Good working units are still trading in the $300-400 range.I just sold mine,as I have a new BMW Nav 5 and was not using the Zumo, but would have happily kept it,if needed.

As I recall the MC mounts for the Zumo 550 was famous for failing over time and exposure to the elements. Might be a bad mount.
Have you tried to power the unit up via the USB or car adapter?

No, I was just going by what my friend had told me. Before I send it off to Minnesota, I'll try & hook it up using the mount/cradle that it came with. Do you have any info on what exactly the failure issue was with the mounts?

Never mind - I googled and found that while the Zumos themselves are waterproof, Garmin screwed the pooch in the design of the cradle connection.

Last year when my 550 pooped the bed I shipped it to Garmin and for $150 they shipped me a refurbished one. So far so good.

550 is no longer on the exchange/refurb list with Garmin.
If you get the right person at Garmin, you might get a discount on a
    new(er) unit.

My 550 shorted two circuits when I put it in the auto mount and this guy was able to diagnose it and fix it. So far I'm pleased with his service and it was a LOT cheaper than a new GPS.

It'll be a black day when I have to retire my Zumo 550. Its been a great unit and only failed me once ( dying battery). Replaced the battery and its been a winner since.

Give them a call, he's going to repair my 60csx for under fifty bucks. All Garmin would do was offer me 20% off a new one. No thanks Garmin!:kboom:kboom

Thanks for another positive review of PalmDr. I haven't sent my 550 in to them yet as I've been busy with other issues in my life. Will get to it one of these days :baldy

Yup and Garmin's 20% is only off of full retail though their store. :deal

That makes it pretty much worthless as you can usually find one for more the 20% off retail anyway.

I just found this thread and am really glad I did!

My 550 has served me well for over 6 years, but the bottoms have started to fall off and my eBay replacement screen is not as bright as the original. Baeed on the reviews here, I'll have Chris repair the full shot and keep on riding.

I LOVE when people are able to fix things instead of filling landfills.

I'll provide an update once I get my unit back.
