I love it when I can keep a tool I like and not have to spend money replacing it with something that has a new learning curve. If its broke, fix it.

Thanks to this thread, I'm sending in my 550 as well.

Screen started de-laminating this morning and the unit started acting up yesterday coming down off of Mt. Mitchell.

Is there any fix for missing buttons or am I hosed?

Also my unit stopped charging on a long trip and when I looked at my cradle just one of those damn little brass buttons was gone on the cradle.

Would that cause it not to charge?

If this happens is there an alt charging method?

    Keep those 450-550's rolling.
    See post #2
Number of folks have used them with good results at very reasonable prices.

I sent my old 450 there for some kind of malfunction; I Think he’s still in business. I still use my 450 because it’s loaded with a bunch of MadMaps. Haven’t figured if/how they can be moved to a 595, which by the way, has the worst screen
From my experience, a lot of the 450s suffer from failure to startup. Usually removing the battery and re-inserting solves the issue until next time.

The maps aren't coded to the Zumo so if you plug your 450 and 595 into the computer and open their memory. You should then be able to simply copy the "gmapsupp" file of your Madmaps from the 450 to the 595's memory and put it in the "Map" folder with the other map files. Just rename it to distinguish it from the others.
Or, download the latest Open Street maps. http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

I need too look into this.
    I have 2 550s, 1 works and 1 doesn’t.
Changed over too the 396 and while it processes faster and has some cool features, it sucks!
Using XM streaming through the phone, but you lose signal you gotta reach up and swap too mp3s on the fly.
Also it maybe just a setting, when listening to streamed tunes and a call comes in it does not go back too the music when I disconnect the call.
    I like my 550s!

use a rubber eraser to clean off the contacts----it might just not be getting power---to power up----also check it by plugging it into a charger--to rule that out....

I've used Chris Short to keep my old Zumo 550s alive. He is able to replace broken buttons, bad touchscreen, software issues, etc.. Just about anything, from what I've seen. Highly recommend.

Completely agree with all the recommendations of Chris Short. He gave my Zumo 550 a new touch screen and refurbished the buttons on each side of the screen. It's like new now.

Am I the only one that thinks being an electronics repair expert and having the last name Short is at least a little humorous?

Ah...as long as you don't try to shortchange him, I reckon he's fine with his name.

I've kind of rolled my own as far as repairs go. Bought it used from a local back in 2011. Have used Palm DR. for a new internal battery (replaced it myself), and I think that's it. External batt came from eBay, digitizer + screen (two due to water intrusion) also came from eBay, and the button covers came from a fella over in the Netherlands, but can't remember where how I found out about him.

It's a good unit. I tried another for a short spell after a cheapie my family gave me died, but the new one sucked. That's when I found the one a local had. My maps are kinda outdated, but I have heard horror stories about others trying to do the upgrade, so I'll just live with what I have.
