The Armchair Adventure Festival is a go! After originally debuting as a virtual conference, a diversion for riders locked down at home during the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers have a real in-person event planned for now.
The 2021 Armchair Adventure festival is scheduled for September 24-26. This is a UK event, running in Mount Edgcumbe County Park. It would be difficult for North American riders to attend.
That’s kind of the point, though. International travel is pretty much a no-go again this year. Organizers Reece Gilkes and Matt Bishop (aka The Sidecar Guys) are putting something together for riders stuck at home in the UK, instead. So far, the organizers haven’t confirmed all the speakers, but Simon and Lisa Thomas will be at this year’s festival. Previously, the virtual Armchair conferences have included Charley Boorman, Sean Conway (first person to run, cycle and swim from Land’s End to John O’Groats), and Elspeth Beard, (first British woman to go around the world on a motorbike), Ed March, and other interesting adventurers.
The Armchair Adventure Festival isn’t just about bikes—attendees can go kayaking, paddleboarding or swimming along the coast, or go mountain biking on land, among other survival/adventure/camping-oriented activities.
Organizer Reece Gilkses said the festival had more than 40,000 people tune in to watch the virtual events in 2020, and he’s looking forward to meeting many of them in person.
