    No... I reacted to the dakar.com media release... seems it is confirmed on facebook that he does intend to take the start of SS8 and attempt to complete the Marathon stage from Uyuni...

    They can get parts from each other (other competitors and/or fellow team-mates) during the stage, and also on liaison - you might notice that there is a short liaison section between the ASS and the bivouac this evening. This is where any last-minute swapsies can occur (quite legitimately) before the vehicles are put into parc ferme overnight.



    Pretty much - the rules have always stipulated that during the timed stages, only help from other competitors is allowed. As the cars got faster, so the propensity for major components to fail increased, and trucks were the most suitable vehicle to carry the spares in.

    Of course now there is effectively a whole class for those with money to burn and race for the hell of it - but then in the bigger teams even those trucks have got trucks behind them to support them!

    ps. with regard to your [Mouse] post a few pages earlier - I don't think anyone here is suggesting that Lyndon is trying to bend any rules at all (as you say he wouldn't - primarily from a personal integrity point of view of course, and because so much of his campaign is on camera this year) - rather people are just trying to understand the logisitics of competing in the Malle Moto class, since so much focus is on it this year - both from the Dakar Orga, and not least the exposure the Races2Places media team are giving to a wider audience. I agree that this daily diary series is probably doing more to promote the Dakar Rally outside of the hard-core race followers than any project before it. Such is the reach of social media.

    The Peugeot T4 truck (also) presumeably has spares that CDp then (later) repaired their canabilized car - after Peterhansel had left... The "extra" person could be a member of the truck crew... all competitors can help all (others) on a Marathon stage... theoretically a team of four auto's and two T4 trucks... have 14 personell on hand at a Marathon bivouac... if ALL are schooled in mechanics - that's a lot of spanners you can toss at a problem.

    The second part of this marathon stage also includes the longest special stage of the rally, covering nearly 500 kilometres. Before leaving the Altiplano, the competitors will be put to a tough test in high-altitude sand dunes 3,500 m above sea level. This should start to give us a better idea of the leaderboard; the handful of men or women capable of winning the Dakar will now be revealed.


    High-altitude + dunes + worn tires + tired engines and bodies.

    There was discussion earlier on tyre/wheel changes on the marathon stage and whether they can be swapped between riders - Lyndon talks about it here (at about the 4.00 mark) and from his comments it certainly seems that tyres/wheels cannot be swapped and that, not only are the tyres/rims marked, they are also marked with the competitor number and, presumably, this is checked by ASO at the end of the second marathon day

    Out of all this KTM "inheriting" the balance of Power - now that Barreda is limping (reportedly)... there is one blue bike that (aside from a couple small sand vaults and a mud superman) is AVB... the moral "69" of the elite. :D

    Cred to Meo and Tobes for opening yesterday... BamBam made beceaup time... but paid the penalty (take a knee)... Kevin is in good position overall... Soultrain is handy in there behind the Bever and QUINT ain't out of this show yet...

    KTM and Yamaha are in strength positions, Honda have their shot with Kevin... if Joan knee is as bad as reported... Husky is not out of it...

    This thing is (still) wide open.

    WALKNER for the SS8 win in MOTO today. :D

    Mouse - lots of strategic issues will be discussed, but whilst the riders are in contention they will be at a personal level and they will be free to implement whatever interpretation and personal strategy they wish once out in the field.

    At any stage they are out of contention, then their personal agenda is no longer theirs (well in theory) - I think that is what is being said.
