yep both up and about and back on board. I raced the 701 at Mt Gambier at Easter and at Broady on 5/6 May and got a hit on the back wheel from behind on the left hander in its second last race that sent me down the road....... bugger bent bars and scuffed up a bit. First time its been down other than when you pushed it over at the Murray Valley track :-)

its semi retired from racing now and is going back into ADV trim so hope to catch up soon for a ride

Oil consumption on mine’s a bit high - sitting at around 300-350ml per 1000km. Done about 8000km since new so running in should be done. I mentioned to the dealer and was surprised and said he may have to “open a case” with Husky. Otherwise runs well - especially with the performance mapping and Rade intake/ wings exhaust combo.

Mine consumes about the same but only has 2600km and my dealer said to keep an eye on it until I get back and see.
Should have around 9000km by then.

Yep mine too goes through that amount, its a 17 model with wings and Rade pod. Thought it was a bit normal because my 690 did the same, so didn't query it. Would be keen to understand what all other 701 owners are experiencing, brand of oil might be a factor.

Mine was using oil still at 16000km, Husky opened her up, new valve seals installed as there was oil on the piston and a valve had a lip on it, new valve. That was a few weeks ago, now after another 2000km, no oil use whatsoever so far.

I’m running motul 10/60, synthetic, and haven’t had to top up levels between services, just did 2000 kms across Simpson and return, no oil loss at all, I do change it @ around 2-3000 kms but.

Good to hear, as I've just replaced the oil with the Motul 10W60 synthetic. We'll see how much it chews going to Winton in a few weeks.

first proper ride on the 701 and a few observations.
    • the bike feels a lot more 'dirt bikey' than my 690 though i did have the rally raid tanks on it for most of its life
    • stock suspension is a lot better than the 690 though the rear is a bit soft and the front is terribly soft with me bottoming out so hard so many times today my neck is sore
    • the new motor is nice, doesn't hit you as hard as the old one but its definitely faster and the extra 1000rpm before the rev limiter is nice as i only hit it a few times today
    • it changes gear a bit better, about the same as my old one with the pro shift detent
    • it pops heaps on trailing throttle. I have the evo map in and i pulled the plug on the sas but it pops like hell when you flogging it and you back off. Kind of reminds you of an old XR630
Ill pull it apart next week and start the big set up but its big smiles already

There is something about cracking along a trail on a big bike. A few times today i was up on the pegs along 4wd trails and i glanced down to the speedo and saw 120. Things happen fast at that speed in the bush.

The branches whipping past my helmet were already a blur, but its fun.
Too many of these bikes get covered in shit and trail tyres and plonked around the road. If you keep them up the top of the rev range in the scrub 74 hp is a blast

In Australia, probably most 690s / 701s get used reasonably hard

Overseas, a lot of them seem to be bought as an alternative to something like a Ducati Scrambler

This old (really old now) vid shows 690s being run as the successor to the 625 - before the 500EXC got a toehold - shame that later model 690s didn't build on this sort of application - seems like the new 701 might have got there

That was interesting to watch, I checked on how the guys went and they actually raced with a KTM 530. (they did well, were in 4th (or 5th) place (after starting in 12th) and moving up the field when an aftermarket stator broke and left them on the side of the track at about 240ish miles into the race, they DNF'd)

Im liking the Perun rack in white , although it would soon be a shade of red up here soon enough, and those little indicators look familiar too, are you going to shift the number plate up under the tail light then get the 4 inch cut off wheel onto the remaining mudflap below ?

Emerging onto the QAA line was luxury after standing for hours per day negotiating the Madigan/Hay River tracks, from here we had a light and fast run into Birdsville having burnt off and consumed most of the fuel and water. The 701 used just 35 Liters of fuel for the 519 Km crossing. I carried 16 litres of water and arrived at the Pub with 5 Liters on board. IMG_0406.jpg
