When I clicked on the link Roadrunner posted in this particular post, I get a pop up message saying Authentication Required and it asks for my username and password for a website that is not ADV Rider.

What's the deal? It seems very fishy. I have never seen this before by clicking on any ADV link or on my computer ever before at all. This only seems to pop up when I click on the link Roadrunner posted in that post and it happens every time I do it. When I try to close that tab, it forces Firefox to minimize and it won't allow me to re-open Firefox. I have to force quit Firefox and open it again to get things working.

    I have included a screenshot.

I would guess that the link is to some external site that requires a username/password to view. If a non-member here was sent a link to something on ADV, I would expect the same thing.

Not sure why Firefox is crashing tho'

The link he's been provided goes to a post hosted here. The owner of the pop-up shown is hoping you type in your account credentials so they can use them for spam purposes.

Very few places still use a pop-up authentication like shown. Be highly suspicious when you see them.

Interesting, I had the same pop-up.
Any way of determining who owned the pop-up?

I've been following these reports of occurrence trying to figure out the trend so I can get one myself to see what I can learn. Haven't been able to provoke it yet. But odds are there's no way to trace it back to the actual owner. Even if we had someone with decent forensic skills look at it, it's likely hosted on some unsuspecting person's server space. Might be spyware on the person's computer, might be some advertisement that's carrying additional code. Given that it seems to be happening across desktops, androids, and iphones bets on it coming from an advertisement.

What browser, what device/operating system? E.g. Windows 10 with Chrome, or iPhone 7 with Safari (the default).

Windows 10 and Firefox here. I was able to close the tab and view the page, it didn't minimize my browser like it did to manstache.

I finally got to see one of these, and I don't think it's nearly as interesting as I originally suspected. Your link to Roadrunner's post never turned up anything for me, but I just noticed your screen capture is from 2014, and turns out it's on the 2nd page of that thread. I consistently see the password prompt for dismagazine. It comes from an IMG inside a collapsed quote, and it appears to have been removed from the original post. The quote containing it is Post #30. I'm guessing it either never worked in the first place and that's why it was removed from the original post, or the website/owner has recently changed policies.

Anyway, seems like an isolated case unless you've seen it elsewhere. Hopefully a mod can delete the IMG tag from the quote.
