    From the article:

We are cautious to label this endeavor however, as the new Cagiva will operate in a segment of vehicle that hasn’t really been created yet – a type of electric two-wheeler that is somewhere between an e-bike and a full-blown electric motorcycle, like what Alta and Zero are producing.

The move was told to us by MV Agusta CEO Giovanni Castiglioni, and is similar to one that was announced by KTM CEO Stefan Pierer late last year, where the Austrian brand will develop something that sits between itsKTM-branded e-bikes and its newly released Freeride-E models.

It's happening already. I wouldn't call MV and KTM big time major manufacturers, but they are established, historic and highly respected brands that have seen that the future of electric motorcycles will look different from ICE motorcycles. (KTM in particular has been on a tear recently, and this move only reinforces that they're on track to become a dominant force.) Not only is a bicycle-evolved EM a more technologically correct approach than sticking an electric motor in an ICE motorcycle, it will likely play better to the millennials who are the future market for motorcycles of any type.
