This thread is a few months old, but one of the more recent ones for the CDR/GCDR, so I figured I would post here (and a few other places). I'm doing the northern section from the border to Colorado solo, leaving on the 18th from Portland. My father did it back in like 2001 and said it will be fine alone as long as I pay attention and don't do anything stupid. I will have an InReach with me, GPS tracks in my phone, and backup maps. I will be camping most nights, with a night in a cheap motel or two.

I have a couple of questions and am wondering if anyone here has the answers...

    - How much water would people recommend having on me? I have a 3L hydration pack and will have another liter in my bags, at least. Should I plan to have more than that with me?

    - For those of you that camped: did you do pay campgrounds, or did you do primitive camping along the way?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

I did CDR in August 2012 and was 63 at time. I took a 2 liter bottle of water and 2 liter soft drink with me. However I did not cook at all. I would hit a restaurant for breakfast or lunch depending how near a town I was at beginning of day. I always ate dinner out, sometimes a little earlier than I liked so I could get to my next camp site before dark. I carried all the usual feel good road food. In the evening I would lay out the next days ride.

As to camping, I primitive camped once, NFS campgrounds maybe 5-6 nights, paid commercial campgrounds 6-7 nights, and motels 3 nights. So....mixed bag. Where I primitive camped there was evidence that other people had done the same thing so I felt I wasn't adding another man made foot print to the NFS.

I was on a KLR650 so I avoided the bad areas that required riding ability above my pay grade. Bottom line, it was my adventure...I get to make my own rules. Make your adventure ride a great one!

Primitive camped, no need to pay for camping. I did one motel, I tend to motel every 4 or 5 days to clean up.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I’m 63 as well and understand your methodology. Might need some of your restaurant info!

Have not yet, and the ride calendar is filled for this year. If I can find one to 3 other riders willing/able to do it in '19, then I am up for that.

No, I am not riding it this year. I was just curious if HeidiHo was taking it on. If you ride it good luck.
