"Yes the next two stages! The Marathon stages! High altitude and fast tracks... Who does that suit

I'll hold onto the memories of his performance in 2016 ...stage 12 iirc. where even the course marshalls couldn't flag him down in time to stop him completing the days original stage (400+km) whilst they pondered whether its too hot too dangerous etc etc..
As his Team Manager says ...there's something different about TP

AND now to the Results of the Quiz......
    And the Winner is ......Kippo!

Toby mightn't have got much bike time in before Dakar but he certainly appears not to have wasted his time watching the world go by.

The bugger is giving me the strong impression (and getting stronger) that he's ramped up his tactical abilities big time, no longer is he just quick but he's now playing a really cool hand.

Indeed I think he's the only one left out there still realistically holding plenty in reserve, we haven't seen him go as yet.

I expected him to go hard in the prologue but he held back. Since then he's trundled up mid stage, had a captain cook at who's where and then settled back down to fight another day.

Interesting he went for a bit more of a run stage 6, i figure there's advantage to an early start (maybe less nav and cleaner trails). Given the way he's run to date there probably is advantage so he's dived in to grab it.

He and bambam are the only two riders in the field who I think can blitz at will but bambam for all that he is has not shown himself able to play the long game well.

I'm expecting a good match up between these two, expect them both on the podium barring mishaps and mechanicals, Toby I reckon on the top step.

And as I threw up days ago Yamaha to round out the podium, would love it to be rodf but rather suspect not.

Most interesting Dakar, looks real tough. Scott and the Malle Moto runners would be hurting plenty I'd guess.

HaHa!! That was awesome. Anyone who doubts Meo's ability on a bike especially in the mud needs to look through his history racing WEC. He is a VERY special rider. Not surprised at all that he won Today's stage. I actually impressed that TP was able to hang with him.
    Can't wait for stage 7.

Toby didn't just hang with Meo, unlike ss5 they weren't riding together ss6 but Toby was leading for good parts till the end.

    Wha'd'ya mean Dbe D's?
Ya reckon someone's onto the team stooges being discretely pos'ned within the stage
and equipped with discrete radio comms.
Linked back to base and assessing live tracking? No couldn't be. Truly... no.
This is pure sport. Not '60 behind the iron curtain.
Ya don't think that these stooges could then be using preset signaling to provide said
team riders with the latest live team orders & strategy.

I reckon TP has his throttle hand firmly tied down and had it zipped up in his back pocket.

Hey where ya's Feral ....get that tipping finger ready and warmed up!

PS Anyone worked out how HRC have adapted to last years penalties and modded
they're remote covert refueling rigs for this year?

No one here heard of the "Commentators Curse"...No Wuckin Way am I putting it in print.
Anyway It's obv which way I'm leaning!
But I'm not going to jinx him ....'er I meant her! Ok HER.

TP has forgone a bucket load of time on at least 3 of the 6 days so far, and the times I'm referring to
are on the last stages of the day. Day 3, 5(?) & 6, most of them as transport stages.
Therefore the presumption he's getting signals and setting himself up for tmrw's departure order.

Meo ( and Johnny Aubert) are fabulous riders. Fact is most of the top 100 here are. Olivier Pain currently leading maille is ex Yamaha Factory, an outright contender, a few short years ago. That's till Yamaha's ill fated '4 seperate fuel tanks into 2' redesign of 2015 killed off his desire, or his contract.
BTW the Yamaha's look really good this time around. Best they have for 4 years.

And wasn't it Meo who TP chased all the way home in the 2014 ISDE (iirc).

However is Meo still slated as a domestic atm? Does he have the desert cred yet of TP.
Just take a relook at that interview vid at the end of day 6 posted on top of this page. And once Meo had his fun about killing TP's arse...TP laughed along just as hard btw, and then kinda matter of factly said "Yeah I'll do the same to you in 2 days time" .....laughs all round.

TP has been positioning himself Mouse where he wants to be!

The 3rd round of the Masters starts as of tonight.
Theres 8 time wise ....6 serious, 1 of the 6, it would have to fall in his lap tho.
Of course who knows what team orders could do around stage 12.

So whose goin to be there on 'The Sunday of the motorsport equivalent of Augusta Georgia?
So who's goona be there To tee it up at the 64th hole ? Thats when the real rallye raid starts.

So to my Question regarding HRC ^ above ^ .
Are the Honda's carrying more fuel load this year? Anyone?
Must be? They couldn't be that stupid.

Stage 4 they got into a big huddle late in the stage, easy for Toby (and everyone else) to see who was where and pick their way home. Ss5 he played side by side with Meo, daresay a bit of pacing then going on between them which sounds prudent to me, ss6 Toby ran by himself the whole stage, he put down a quick time regardless but he was probably in the zone and must want an early start ss7.

Hard to infer any signalling but it's a nice theory. Should such be proven the entire team would be dsq afaict for the regs, that's a lot of risk, reputational risk not only to Toby but to ktm as a team and brand.

He's not forgoing a bucket load of time I can see, he is playing strategy which I daresay they all are and perhaps some more successfully than others. Obviously bambam went in to ss5 knowing he was going to rip into it early and try to make up time, it didn't take that long for him to settle back down again but by then the damage was done, everyone else up the front ran pretty much the same times early on ss5, cautious times by comparison.

These guys are pro riders, they'd have a fair idea if they are cruising or racing.

There is also speculation Toby is favouring his leg, it's a useful excuse but way I read his times it's nothing more than an excuse. We are talking the same bloke who claims to win a finke with a broken ankle and an isde with broken ribs...

OP is still listed as an elite rider coincidentally and he'll win more money should he finish first mm than 6th outright...

    Huh?

They refilled last year because they carried enough fuel to get them to that servo. They could have (should have) carried more, but some bright spark thought he was being clever when he saw there was a servo just off the route and decided the bikes only needed enough fuel to get to there, then they could refuel and continue on there way, giving them around 15 less kg to cart around until the servo.

It had nothing to do with fuel capacity of the CRF and just bad rule interpretation on the HRC management side of things (or worse).

I wouldn't have thought the next 2 altitude stages would not be ideal for TP to attack, would he be just more worried about trying to get through them healthy

Interesting call by Ricky, not sure where he's heading wiht that closing line of thought short of out-psyching himself.

Meo obviously wants some points on the board, he'll be lead ktm man (unless he's pulled back as water carrier for Toby but then walkner is back there too).

With more dunes to come this is probably the time for Toby to get out and boogie up a buffer, he may just wait until ss8 to do so which is my expectation. Walkner will just want to stay in touch which may prove ambitious.

Ss7? Meo again, they'll use him to take the pressure off Toby while making bambam etc chase. Toby will play with the field again.

TPies has stated in numerous interviews since his debut that he’s not really affected by altitude... the bike on the other hand is so attacking is difficult even if he wants to.

Sorry if this is the wrong spot for a technical question, but I've had a look and can't find any info on what differences are there between the KTM 450 rally engine and the KTM 450 exc or sx-f engine? I'm guessing more oil, bigger oil filter, higher revving to get more HP, cams? Is impressive these 450's punch out about 70hp (more than a 500 exc) and last thousands of race km's. Looking forward to seeing TP unleash his over the rest of the Dakar!

Bigger cooling definitely. That's about the extent of my tech knowledge and the answers are well and truly buried in the main Dakar speculation thread. Trev or feral might know, Troy will.
