Free maps are great but I still can't figure out how the device or the computer prep works. I am going to buy the subscription to Gaia for my iPhone, that seems to be way easier to use and way cheaper.

Been using a montana for a year now, had enough, its tough and waterproof, but that's about it....hard to use, routing is haphazard and as for that POS Basecamp, it's developer needs a good smack in the gob.
I'm going to buy a tough smartphone and put an app on it

I use Polaris Navigation for off road stuff. I make the routes on google earth, email it to myself, then it will open in Polaris. Get's saved under "Trails". Works every time and it's all free. Plus, you can draw your own trail on Polaris. You can follow the route on a "hike and bike" map where it's heading up. Google maps only works with North up.

For all you guys who live way out beyond, you're lucky. Since I still work, I have little time to venture past the Jersey Pines and most of PA. My phone works great with no issues in this area. So I totally understand your outlook.
When the choice came down to a BIG $$ Garmin Montana and the free app, it was a no-brainer for me.
Have fun and don't get lost.

Quick garmin 595lm question, is there a way to swipe the map to move it without have the stupid "GO!" bar come up on the bottom? And it zooms in and jumps around. I know try not to push to hard, but its not easy.

It's not pressure of the swipe that brings up the Go!, it's the duration of the press at a single point. It's particularly important to lift quickly at the end of the swipe.
