Google, as of June, will significantly raise their API pricing (~1400% in general) to small Mapping App's which I have no doubt will force many out of business or require them to make costly changes to their App in order to obtain Map data from another source.

This is Googles way of generating more money from Users data. Google will even be charging Apps for using the API's that already generate revenue (like making reservations) for Google when an App calls them.

If your favorite Nav App disappears this summer you may have Google to thank for it.

    Damn!

If I'm understanding their business model correctly, this might really put the hurt on Furkot ... but I hope I'm wrong.

Wonder whatever happened to "Don't be evil"?

Motion X died a while back.

I think because the Google also owns Waze, they are trying to capture the entire market.

Then it will be Gooooooogle and Garmin. :fpalm

It's because Jeff Bezos thinks $100 billion is not enough.

Meanwhile, there is still Open Street Maps. And of course, the dearly beloved Basecamp...

    Spot the deliberate mistake! :shog

Actually, all these billionaires seem the same to me - they just want more of my money and I usually give it to them in one way or another.

Do you want Bezos to give stuff away for free on Amazon?

Would be nice but I won't hold my breath. Mind you, he could give it just to me and then Amazon wouldn't go broke quite so quickly.:-)

Google = Heroin addiction. Eventually they will have the world by the balls, then we're screwed.

You can get to the pricing details here. And, you can read the furore on reddit here.

The Furkot team will be posting their plan shortly describing why they will no longer be using Google Maps API.

This is CRAP, I have been using Furkot since Dan first posted about it. I love it...

Not to worry, I expect that the Furkot team will find ways to transition with as few feature disruptions as possible.

OSM is superb, hopefully it isn't affected.

As an added benefit, maybe no more seasonal road closures!

FWIW, I do hope the Furkot team comes out this in good shape. I know Furkot's not to everybody's taste but, still, the Furkot folks have turned out a fine product and they listen to and support us ADV types. Good on 'em!

Furkot was already transitioning to OSM mapping as I understood it.

Which is good, because I really, REALLY love that website.

Infact if it allows me to not have to go over a 5500km route 3km at a time proofreading to keep the track on the road (google limitation) all the better.

Agreed. This is going to turn a lot of apps and users to other mapping sources.
