I rode up Hogback today. I checked out the trail down along the power right of way so you don't need to. x_x

Hey Crue! It’s been a long while since I’ve popped in. I’m hoping to get more riding done this year. I’ve been slacking due to work and other hobbies, but am putting the 690 at a higher priority this year. JJMYZRIDER has a new schedule that is conducive to riding, so I see some evening rides happening along with some quick overnighters.

For those who may know him, Ron Harseth from Stevensville (Wansfel on ADVRider) died of a massive stroke this week. Ron was a rider's rider and a friend to all who knew him. He planned the routes for the Best of the Montana 1000 rides for several years. I rode with him last summer and many summers before. He was a gentleman and always available for a rider in need. More info is available at the 2018 Best of the Montana 1000 planning thread. Ron grew up riding the trails around Helena and never lost his love of adventure motorcycling.

He was a gentleman in his contribution here. Wish I got to know him in person. Godspeed.

Does anyone in town have a DR650? I'm hoping once things clear up a little more I can convince someone to go for a ride and swap bikes for a while so I can compare my DRZ to a DR650? I keep wondering if maybe I should sell mine and switch for better road ability with our high speed limits since I don't really do serious trail riding anyway.

I rode just a short section of the 1000 when it came through around little prixkly pear, empire, etc. Seemed like a great guy.

I have a DR650, and am happy to go for a ride and do a swap test. But it may not give you the info you need. Mine is an old 1993, kickstart unit. They were only made that way until 1996, and then were changed to be more like the current model.
    Mine is also well used.
I will be gone until mid April. Call me at 406-202-1341 if you are still interested.
    Chuck.

Thanks. I'm not sure how the same it would be. I think from what I've read that the DR is the same from '96 through present and pre '96 is different in some ways.

I have a 2007 DR650 if you want to go for a ride let me know. It has the acerbis 5.3 tank and I just had stiffer springs put in the forks. It runs well. Lets ride if the snow ever lets up.

June 22 is the date for the annual hogback ride. Meet at York and leave about 7PM for a 20 mile ride to the top and about 4000ft elevation gain. Let's watch the sun go down on the longest friday of the year. There will be some trophies by a noted Helena metal artist??? Oldest vehicle/ rider combined age, smallest ride to make it before sunset and best costume (it get's cold so the bikini might be chilly. We might only get to the big snowbank but a fun time will be had by all. 2,3 and 4 wheelers welcome for a fun relaxed ride. In the past we have had rain, lightning, and freezing temps. Any bigfoot sightings will be worth extra points.

    Greetings Helena riders,

From May 21st to August 2nd I will be parking often in town. It's a cage, Forester type.

It's where the Montana Conservation Corps Central Divide office is located, on
    1229 E. Lyndale Ave. Zip: 59601.

We will be gone for up to 10 days at a time. It looks like we park on the street. I'm looking into leaving her in a paid parking garage, but can't seem to find one close.

It looks like the Airport parking is $3.00 a day. That is good insurance.
46 minute walk. So, 35 mics if you are walking fast.

Does anyone have any pro tips to offer?

    Thanks for reading.

How many of you are there? Can't you just park in the parking lot for the building? That isn't the best area of town, but to be honest the range of neighborhoods in town isn't real wide in the first place, so that isn't saying a whole lot. Maybe, put a craigslist ad up asking to rent some garage space in the sixth ward? I'm tempted to offer parking at my place, but I live out in the valley and I don't trust my 3 and 5 year olds not to mess with a car that's sitting in my yard for long periods of time.

Thanks for the quick reply and for the guy on the ground intel.
I may have to go to Craigslist. Good idea.

There will be 9 Veterans Green Corps.
    7 Summer positions.
14 Full term positions. Not sure what that means.
    Maybe 30.

Plus the Central Divide staff. Maybe 8 people.

We are encouraged to car pool. When we check out a Forester Sevice Vehicle, we can park a personal cage in it's place. This would be gated of course. I'm sure the Crew Leader will park their cage there.

It looks like we will have connections to Fort Henery Harrison to sleep in our days off.
Hopefully we can leave some cars there and car pool to the 6th Ward.

Do you have a scouting report on the Fort?
    Is it a safe place?

    Thanks for your time.

Also, with the program, I have to do the following:

    • Attend at least one public meeting and complete non-MCC volunteer service hours.
If anyone has any good recommendations, please let me know.

    Thanks again.

Looking at Google, there are parking places at the building. I think your car would be fine there. Another thing you could do is park at the hospital. They don't tow because they think it is a patient. If you want, you could hook up with me and I could move the car every couple of days. I would offer my place to park it, but I'm out in the country and you would need a ride to get anywhere

Yeah, out by the fort is nice. A bit of helicopter and full auto gunfire noise depending on the day. Helena isn't very big and your office location is pretty centralized so nowhere in town is going to be more than a few miles away.

For the public meetings you could try to make it to a Fish, Wildlife and Parks meeting. http://fwp.mt.gov/doingBusiness/insideFwp/commission/upcomingMeetings.html

If you look through the event calendar from the newspaper you could maybe find something also. https://www.helenaevents.net/#tracking-source=menu-nav
